32. And this also must be known, that in Rhegium, Troilus, addressing Abba Maximus, said that the consiliarius John had written to him about a compromise proposed to them; and the disorder of your disciples prevented this from happening for now. But I think that the aforementioned consiliarius John did not write to Troilus, but to Mennas the monk, and he told those of the palace.
33. And after these things they brought them to Constantinople, and took action against them, and after they had anathematized and reviled Maximus among the saints, and the blessed Anastasius his disciple; and the most holy Pope Martin, and the holy Sophronius, Patriarch of Jerusalem, and all the orthodox who were of like mind with them, they brought also the other blessed Anastasius, and using the same anathemas and insults also against him they handed him over to the magistrates, saying thus: You then, Anastasius, having put on the grey cloak of the universal curse of the anathemas, depart from the canonical hearing, being carried off to the state of Gehenna which you have chosen, with the glorious and honorable and sacred synod being with us, which has adjudicated all things, which will immediately receive the judgment after us, and will execute upon you what seems right to the civil laws, as they shall judge, on account of your great blasphemies and tyrannies. For the sentence of the present synod against them, and which, by the cooperation of the almighty Christ our true God, has canonically decreed what is necessary against you Maximus, Anastasius, and Anastasius, since what was lacking in relation to the things impiously said and done by you was, (172) to be subjected to the severe penalties of the laws; even if there is no penalty worthy of such offenses and blasphemies of yours, leaving you to the just Judge concerning the greater judgment, in the present life, and in this relaxing the rigor of the laws, so that you may gain your life, we decree for you, that the most illustrious prefect present with us, immediately take you into his mighty praetorium; and after striking your backs with scourges, (Maximus, and Anastasius and Anastasius, the instrument of your Maximus's and Anastasius's and Anastasius's) intemperance, that is your blasphemous tongue, to cut out from within. Then also, your most wretched right hand, which ministered to your blasphemous reasoning, to cut off with a blade, while being paraded at the same time with the loss of these same abominable members, having gone around the twelve districts of this queen of cities, to hand you over to perpetual exile and imprisonment in addition to these things, perpetually, so that afterwards you, and for all the time of your life, may lament your own blasphemous errors, with the curse devised against us having been turned upon your own head. The prefect, therefore, having taken them, and having punished them, cut off their members; and having paraded them through the whole city, he exiled them to Lazica.
