are superior to all human things, and are zealous neither to possess anything nor to care for their bodies, nor indeed to profit from anything else whatever) he built a church, which he dedicated to the Mother of God, so that it might be possible for them to spend their lives there both in prayer and in performing sacred rites. And this church he built not at the very summit of the mountain, but a great deal lower down. For it is impossible for a man to pass the night on the summit, since constant crashes and certain other more divine things are heard at night, striking terror into the power and mind of a man. Here, they say, Moses once received the laws from God and brought them forth. And at the foot of the mountain this Emperor built a very strong fort, and he established in it a very considerable garrison of soldiers, so that the barbarian Saracens might not be able from there, since the land is a desert, as I have said, to invade most secretly the lands of Palestine. These things, then, have been done in this place. But all that has been done in the monasteries which are both here and throughout the rest of the East will now be written down by me as in a summary. Now he restored the following monasteries in Jerusalem. That of Saint Thalelaeus. That of Saint Gregory. That of Saint Panteleemon in the desert of the Jordan. A hospice in Jericho. A church of the Mother of God in Jericho. That of the Iberians in Jerusalem. That of the Lazi in the desert of Jerusalem. That of Saint Mary on the Mount of Olives. That of the Spring of Saint Elisha in Jerusalem. That of Siletheos. That of Abba Romanus. In Bethlehem he restored the wall. That of Abba John in Bethlehem. And he built wells or cisterns as follows: At the monastery of Saint Samuel, a well and a wall. At the monastery of Abba Zacharias, a well. At the monastery of Susanna, a well. At the monastery of Aphelius, a well. At the monastery of Saint John on the Jordan, a well. At the monastery of Saint Sergius on the mountain called Kisserôn, a well. The wall of Tiberias. The poor-house in Bostra. In Phoenicia: the house of the Mother of God in Porphyreon. A monastery of Saint Phocas on a mountain. The house of Saint Sergius in Ptolemais. In Damascus, a house of Saint Leontius. Near Apamea he restored the poor-house of Saint Romanus. The wall of the blessed Maron. Near Theopolis he restored the church of Daphne. In Laodicea he restored that of Saint John. In Mesopotamia: he restored the monastery of Saint John. The monasteries of Delphrachis, Zebinus, Theodotus, John, Sarmathes, Cyrenus, Begadaeus. A monastery at Apadnas in Isauria. He restored the bath and poor-house of the city of Kourykos. The poor-house of Saint Conon. He restored its aqueduct in Cyprus. A house of Saint Cosmas and Damian in Pamphylia. A poor-house of Saint Michael in Emporium, also called the port of the city of Perge in Pamphylia. BOOK VI. These things, then, have been done in this place by the Emperor Justinian. And in Alexandria the following things were accomplished. The river Nile does not flow all the way to Alexandria, but after flowing up to a town which is called Chaereu, it then turns to the left, leaving behind the boundaries of the Alexandrians. For this reason, the men of old, so that the city should not be entirely without a share, dug a very deep canal from Chaereu and contrived by a small outflow from the river into it to make it accessible. Here also it happens that certain other outlets from Lake Maria empty. On this canal, however, it is not possible for large ships to sail at all, but they transfer the Egyptian grain from Chaereu into small boats, which they are accustomed to call diarêmata, and so they transport it into the city, as far as it is possible for the river in the canal to reach, and they deposit it in a place which the Alexandrians call Phiale. But since it often happened that the grain was destroyed here when the populace fell into sedition,
