but rejoicing in the deeds that would be dared, if those men should succeed—for men always rejoice in innovations, and one, having seen a new evil accomplished, would more easily gloat over those who suffered than rejoice with those who benefited from a good thing—having mingled with the crowd, they were uttering terrible shouts from below up to the emperor who was not visible and they were making accusations against the supposedly disloyal ones, alluding to the Mouzalones, appearing to show fervent zeal for him and his family. And so that those men might not act before suffering, pretending to be afraid, they hastened the emperor's permission against them, and at the same time they were making it clear that the emperor would permit it; but if not, they would attack and do the deed anyway. While they were saying these things and making a disturbance at the same time, those entrusted with the imperial guard—the daring plot having been revealed to them either by someone previously or indeed at the same time as those men were making the disturbance—pretending to be afraid, immediately bring out the boy, in the hope of shaming them, as if to make the sovereign appear to those who were demonstrating. But when the youth appeared, the shouting grew louder and they made a more disorderly 83 noise, those around him teach him to gesture with his hand; and this was at once a signal for both things, that he was restraining the clamor and that he was yielding by giving permission. And for those around the young ruler, the gesture of the hand was left as a sufficient defense for later before the authorities, that they were supposedly contriving to check the uproar, but to the others it was considered more than enough for a concession. Immediately, therefore, a shout was raised, as if the emperor were conceding, and at the same time they poured forth in a great mass, and each one ran together as an avenger of the imperial safety, as if he would even face danger first, if necessary; and spurring one another on with the noise, they hurried to the monastery of the Sosandra, to do the worst evils to those who were, as they themselves said, ill-disposed to the imperial power. But there were some who remained, not going along with them, acting more prudently than rashly, and at the same time, if they should learn that those against whom they were running together had been gotten out of the way, intending to act more audaciously at the tents to carry off the treasures; for there would be no one to prevent them, once their owners had thus perished. So while some, together with some of the officials, were standing inside the church as the hymn-singing was being performed, others were running together en masse, making noise beyond what was customary, and they were already visible to those inside, going straight for the monastery, some of the servants who were outside, suspecting from their noise that they might perhaps do some of the forbidden things, being practically on their own authority, and at the same time also suspecting revolution, report to those inside with a pale face. And they in haste report what was revealed to their masters, and they very fervently suggest that it is expedient to bar the monastery gates against those who were coming. But they, upon hearing, paid no heed—for they could not even guess from where those running together were coming for their own harm, but they supposed that those men were also coming for those common rites. But when those men went out again as the crowd drew nearer and suspected even more the noisy and disorderly character, they were even more terrified and reported what was happening with haste, and after them others running quickly, and again others; for there was no one then looking on who did not suspect that their arrival was for the greatest evil. Wherefore many, fearing 85 for themselves because of those evil suspicions, hid themselves, one in one place, one in another; but those who cared for the Mouzalones more than the others, approaching again with a disordered look on their face, reminded them of the invasion of the men; and they said that their haste must be checked by preempting their attack by shutting the gates, lest they get in first; for such a great uproar was not for any good, but would end in some evil. But they paid no attention at all to those who spoke of their fears; for fate, I think, was leading them, and the saying is true, that the divine power takes away the senses of whomever it is about to destroy. Nor indeed did the magnates who were present care when they heard what was being done, either because of some foreknowledge of the future, or indeed because they themselves did not care, whatever those who had gathered might do. But in the meantime the entrances
