they are being accomplished according to their cry which is coming to me. But if not, that I may know. And yet he clearly knew the wickedness of those men; but nevertheless he said, 'Having gone down I will see,' teaching us to await the test of the facts. But these men, not having called us to a court of law, not having listened to our voice, not having wished to learn from us what we think, have granted our slaughter to the wrath of the enemies of the truth. But I embrace tranquility, and especially in the present time, since the apostolic doctrines have been corrupted by many, and the new heresy has been strengthened. But lest anyone of those who do not know us should believe the slanders made against us to be true, and be scandalized, thinking that we hold opinions contrary to the evangelical teaching, I entreat your Magnificence to ask this favor of the gloriously triumphant head, that I may reach the West and be judged by the most God-beloved and most holy bishops there; and if I should be seen to transgress even a little from the canon of the faith, that I be delivered to the very depth of the sea. But if he does not accept even this request of yours, let him at least command me to dwell in our monastery, which is one hundred and twenty miles distant from Cyrrhus, seventy-five from Antioch, and is situated three miles from the city of Apamea. Of these things, if possible, I ask that the first be granted to me through your Greatness, but if not, at least the second. Whose memory we carry about continually, both in our mind and on our tongue, beseeching the Lord of hosts to reward your Magnificence, both with present and with future good things. But I have been compelled to write these things now, having learned that some are also plotting my removal from here. 120 TO LUPICIUS. I think even the enemies of the truth are indignant at our unjust and lawless slaughters. But much more, as is likely, does this new and strange tragedy grieve the nurslings of piety, among whom your Magnificence is pre-eminent. But it is fitting that those who grieve more should bring more zeal and eagerness, so that what has been done impiously and unlawfully may be undone, and that the body of the Church, which is in danger of being torn apart, may return to its former harmony. For this reason, therefore, I ask your Greatness to consider the present time an opportunity for spiritual commerce; and to contribute zeal on behalf of piety, and to receive in return from the bountiful Master, both the greatest care in the present life, and in the future the kingdom of heaven. 121 TO ANATOLIUS THE PATRICIAN. The Master who oversees and governs all things has shown both the apostolic truth of our doctrines, and the falsehood of the slander made against us. For the things written by the most God-beloved and most holy archbishop of great Rome, the lord Leo, to Flavian of holy memory and to the others who were assembled at Ephesus, are very much in harmony with what has been written by us and always preached in the church. For which reason, immediately upon reading them, I praised the man-loving Lord, that he has not completely abandoned the Churches, but has preserved the spark of orthodoxy; or rather, not a spark, but a very great torch, capable of kindling and illuminating the world. For truly in what he wrote, the apostolic
