he descended into the salvific economy, and showing that this had necessarily happened according to its proper reason. And moving on from there, he would set in motion the teaching concerning the divine tribunal. 4.29.4 There indeed he most strikingly rebuked his listeners, refuting the robbers and the covetous and those who had given themselves over to the insatiability of avarice. And striking and, as it were, lashing with his speech, he caused certain of the acquaintances standing around, their consciences smitten, to bow their heads; to whom indeed with clear voices he solemnly declared that they would give an account to God for the things entrusted to them; for God over all had granted him the sovereignty of the things on earth, and he himself, in imitation of the greater One, had entrusted to them the administrations in part, but that all would in due course submit an account of their deeds to the great King. 4.29.5 These things he continually testified, of these he reminded them, of these he was a teacher. But he, confident in his genuine faith, thought and declared such things, while they were slow to learn and deaf to what was good, applauding what was said with their tongues and with shouts of praise, but in their deeds neglecting them because of insatiability, 4.30.1 so that once, taking hold of one of his companions, he said: "And how long, my friend, will we extend our insatiability?" Then, having sketched on the ground with the spear which he happened to have in his hands the measure of a man's height, "All the wealth of this life," he said, "and if you should acquire the whole element of the earth, you will carry away nothing more than this little plot of ground that has been drawn, if indeed you even get that." 4.30.2 But the blessed one, by saying and doing these things, did not stop anyone; but events clearly persuaded them that the emperor's decrees were like prophecies and not mere words. 4.31.1 Since the fear of death was not deterring the wicked from their depravity, with the emperor wholly given over to philanthropy, and with the rulers of each nation prosecuting absolutely no one for their offenses, this indeed brought no small blame upon the entire administration—whether reasonably or not, let each one judge as he pleases, but let it be permitted me to write the truth. The emperor, then, delivered the composition of his orations in the Roman tongue. But interpreters, whose task this was, would translate it into the Greek language; and as a sample of the translated orations, I will append next, after the present subject, that one which he himself entitled "To the Assembly of the Saints," dedicating the writing to the church of God, so that no one might think our testimony concerning what has been said is a boast. And that thing does not seem to me to be unworthy of memory, which indeed the wondrous man accomplished in our own presence. For when we had once asked, in reliance on his reverence for the divine, that he might listen to a discourse about the Savior's sepulcher, he very eagerly lent his ears, and while a multitude of listeners stood around inside the palace itself, he stood upright with the rest and listened. And when we begged him to rest upon the royal throne placed nearby, he was in no way persuaded, but with intense reasoning he made a judgment of what was being said, and he bore witness to the truth of the dogmatic theological points.4.33.2 And when a long time had passed and the discourse was lengthened, we were disposed to stop, but he would not let us, and urged us to carry on to the end; and when we begged him to sit down, he strongly declined, at one time saying that it was not right to listen to dogmas concerning God in a relaxed manner, and at another that this was beneficial and advantageous for him; for it was holy to listen to divine things while standing. And when these things also came to an end, we returned home and took up our usual occupations, 4.34.1 but he, having taken thought for the churches of God, addressed a letter to our person concerning the preparation of the divinely inspired oracles. And he attached to it another concerning the most holy feast of Easter. For when we had addressed to him a mystical revelation of the reason for the feast, how he answered us
