On almsgiving. And who is it that feeds a hungering God and gives a thirsting God drink, and so forth. And how this will be accomplished by someone. And that unless one also does all these things in himself and feeds and gives drink to Christ, he will not be profited at all from doing these things only for the poor, while overlooking himself as unfed and naked of the righteousness of God.
Brothers and fathers, I ought not dare to speak to you at all, nor to hold the rank of a teacher before your love; but since you understand that, just as an instrument fashioned by a craftsman does not sound when it wishes, but when its pipes are filled by the breath, and it is struck rhythmically by the craftsman's fingers, then it produces its sound and fills the ears of all with the sweetest melody, so also you should understand it happens with me, and not, by looking at the lowliness of the instrument, be disposed with displeasure toward what is about to be said. But by looking to the grace of the Spirit, which inspires from above and fills the souls of the faithful, and to the very finger of God, (169) which strikes the chords of the mind and rouses us to speak, as to a master's trumpet sounding or, to speak more truly, as to the King of all speaking to us through an instrument, listen with fear and trembling, in understanding and great quiet.
We all, men, ought to examine and pay attention to ourselves, believers and unbelievers, small and great, so that the unbelievers among us may come to the knowledge and faith of the God who made us, and the believers, that having lived well, we may be shown well-pleasing to him in every good work; the small, that we may be subject to the great for the Lord's sake, and the great, that we may be disposed toward the small as to genuine children, on account of the commandment of the Lord that says: "As you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me." For the Lord did not say this only about the poor, as some think, and those who lack bodily food, but also about all our other brethren, who are wasting away not with a famine of bread and water, but with a famine of idleness and disobedience of the Lord's commandments for inasmuch as the soul is more honorable than the body, so also spiritual food has become more necessary than bodily food, and I think that it is more about this that the Lord says: "I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink," than about bodily and perishable food. For He truly thirsts and hungers for the salvation of each one of us, and our salvation is abstinence from all sin; (170) but abstinence from all sin is impossible to achieve without the practice of the virtues and the fulfillment of all the commandments. For through the fulfillment of the commandments our Master and God and Lord of all is accustomed to be fed by us. For our holy fathers say that just as the demons are fed by our evil deeds and grow strong against us, but when we abstain from evil things, they are starved and weakened, so I reckon also that the one who became poor for our salvation is fed by us, and again is overlooked while hungering. And this we can know and be fully assured of from the very life of the saints and, that I may pass over the others, who are many and beyond

Περί ἐλεημοσύνης. Καί τίς ἐστιν ὁ πεινῶντα τόν Θεόν τρέφων καί διψῶντα ποτίζων καί καθεξῆς. Καί πῶς τοῦτό τινι κατορθωθήσεται. Καί ὅτι εἰ μή τις καί ἐν ἑαυτῷ ταῦτα πάντα ποιήσει καί θρέψει καί ποτίσει Χριστόν, οὐδέν ὠφεληθήσεται ἐκ τοῦ ταῦτα μόνον ποιεῖν εἰς τούς
πένητας, ἑαυτόν δέ ἄτροφον παρορᾶν καί γυμνόν τῆς δικαιοσύνης τοῦ Θεοῦ.
Ἀδελφοί καί πατέρες, ἔδει μέν μή τολμᾶν με πρός ὑμᾶς ὅλως φθέγγεσθαι, μηδέ
διδασκάλου τάξιν ἐπέχειν ἐνώπιον τῆς ἀγάπης ὑμῶν· ἀλλ᾿ ἐπεί περ ἐπίστασθε ὅτι, ὥσπερ τό ὑπό τοῦ τεχνίτου κατασκευασθέν ὄργανον οὐχ ὅταν ἐκεῖνο βούληται, ἀλλ᾿ ὅταν ὑπό τοῦ πνεύματος οἱ αὐλοί μέν πληρωθῶσιν, ὑπό δέ τῶν δακτύλων τοῦ τεχνίτου εὐρύθμως κρούηται, τότε καί τόν ἦχον ἀποτελεῖ καί τάς ἀκοάς τῶν πάντων ἡδυτάτου μέλους ἀποπληροῖ, οὕτω δέ καί ἐπ᾿ ἐμοί συμβαίνειν ἐννοεῖν ὑμᾶς χρή καί μή, τῇ ὀργάνου εὐτελείᾳ ἀποβλέποντας, ἀηδῶς πρός τά ῥηθήσεσθαι μέλλοντα διατεθῆναι. Ἀλλά πρός τήν τοῦ Πνεύματος χάριν, τήν ἄνωθεν ἐμπνεύουσαν καί πληροῦσαν τῶν πιστῶν τάς ψυχάς, καί πρός αὐτόν τόν δάκτυλον τοῦ Θεοῦ, (169) τόν τάς νευράς τοῦ νοός κρούοντα καί πρός τό λαλεῖν ἡμᾶς διεγείροντα ἀφορῶντες, ὡς σάλπιγγος ἠχούσης δεσποτικῆς ἤ, ἀληθέστερον εἰπεῖν, τοῦ Βασιλέως τῶν ὅλων ὡς δι᾿ ὀργάνου λαλοῦντος ἡμῖν, μετά φόβου καί τρόμου ἐν συνέσει καί ἡσυχίᾳ πολλῇ ἀκούσατε.
Πάντες μέν ἄνθρωποι σκοπεῖν καί ἑαυτοῖς προσέχειν ὀφείλομεν, πιστοί τε καί ἄπιστοι, μικροί τε καί μεγάλοι, ἵνα οἱ μέν ἄπιστοι πρός ἐπίγνωσιν καί πίστιν τοῦ πεποιηκότος ἡμᾶς Θεοῦ γενώμεθα, οἱ δέ πιστοί ἵνα καλῶς πολιτευσάμενοι εὐάρεστοι αὐτῷ ἐν παντί ἔργῳ ἀγαθῷ ἀναφανῶμεν· οἱ δέ μικροί ὅπως τοῖς μεγάλοις ὑποταγῶμεν διά τόν Κύριον, οἱ μεγάλοι δέ ὡς πρός τέκνα γνήσια τούς μικρούς διατεθῶμεν διά τήν λέγουσαν ἐντολήν τοῦ Κυρίου· "Ἐφ᾿ ὅσον ἐποιήσατε ἑνί ἑκάστῳ τούτων τῶν ἐλαχίστων, ἐμοί ἐποιήσατε". Οὐ γάρ περί τῶν πενομένων μόνον, ὥς τινες οἴονται, καί τῶν τῆς σωματικῆς τροφῆς ἀπορούτων τοῦτο ὁ Κύριος εἴρηκεν, ἀλλά καί περί πάντων τῶν ἄλλων ἡμῶν ἀδελφῶν, τῶν οὐ λιμῷ τηκομένων ἄρτου καί ὕδατος, ἀλλά λιμῷ ἀργίας καί ὑπακοῆς τῶν ἔντολῶν τοῦ Κυρίου ὅσῳ γάρ ἡ ψυχή τιμιωτέρα ὑπάρχει τοῦ σώματος, τοσοῦτον καί ἡ πνευματική τροφή τῆς σωματικῆς ἀναγκαιοτέρα καθέστηκεν, οἶμαι δέ ὅτι καί περί ταύτης μᾶλλον λέγειν τόν Κύριον· "Ἐπείνασα καί οὐκ ἐδώκατέ μοι φαγεῖν, ἐδίψησα καί οὐκ ἐποτίσατέ με", ἤ περί τῆς σωματικῆς καί φθειρομένης τροφῆς. ∆ιψᾷ γάρ ἀληθῶς τήν σωτηρίαν ἑνός ἑκάστου ἡμῶν καί πεινᾷ, ἡ δέ σωτηρία ἡμῶν ἡ ἀποχή πάσης ἁμαρτίας ἐστίν· (170) ἀποχήν δέ πάσης ἁμαρτίας δίχα τῆς τῶν ἀρετῶν ἐργασίας καί τῆς ἐκπληρώσεως πασῶν τῶν ἐντολῶν κατορθωθῆναι ἀδύνατον. ∆ιά γάρ τῆς τῶν ἐντολῶν ἐκπληρώσεως τρέφεσθαι εἴωθε παρ᾿ ἡμῶν ὁ ∆εσπότης ἡμῶν καί Θεός καί Κύριος τοῦ παντός. Λέγουσι γάρ οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν οἱ ἅγιοι ὅτι καθάπερ ἐκ τῶν πονηρῶν ἡμῶν πράξεων οἱ δαίμονες τρέφονται καί ἰσχύουσι καθ᾿ ἡμῶν, ἐπάν δέ ἡμεῖς τῶν κακῶν ἀφιστάμεθα, λιμοκτονοῦνται ἐκεῖνοι καί ἐκνευρίζονται, οὕτω λογίζομαι καί τόν διά τήν ἡμετέραν σωτηρίαν πτωχεύσαντα τρέφεσθαι παρ᾿ ἡμῶν καί παρορᾶσθαι πάλιν λιμώττοντα. Καί τοῦτο ἐξ αὐτοῦ τοῦ βίου τῶν ἁγίων ἔστι γνῶναι καί πληροφορηθῆναι ἡμᾶς καί, ἵνα τούς ἄλλους παρήσω πολλούς ὄντας καί ὑπέρ
