of cultivation and fruit-bearing. And if someone should wish to take these things literally, the meaning rendered is sound; or if according to the sense, it is much easier; since it is necessary to be persuaded that the things concerning these places are fulfilled primarily and more so in this way by these (sic); but from what has been said, the things at the beginning of the passage at hand can somehow be clear, for in the last days, and it is clear that this is now at the consummation of the ages, the spiritual 171 mountain of God has become manifest, that is, the divine and heavenly Word; and his house, the church, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and for this reason said to be above the mountains. And these things became manifest after the rejection of the people of the circumcision, and after the kingdom of heaven was taken from it, when the sayings from the prophecy set forth above reached their end, through which it was said, The daughter of Sion shall be left as a tent in a vineyard, and as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, and as a besieged city; and when this was fulfilled, Hear the words of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; give ear to the law of God, you people of Gomorrah. To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to me, says the Lord? and what follows; to which he adds, your new moons and your feasts my soul hates; you have become to me an abomination, I will no longer bear your sins. When you stretch forth your hands to me, I will turn away my eyes from you; and if you make many prayers, I will not hear you, for your hands are full of blood. And see how the Word, addressing all these things, does not accuse them here of idolatry or any other sin, nor indeed of many bloods but of the shedding of one particular blood, that of Christ, clearly, concerning which the Word clearly rebukes the people, saying, for your hands are full of blood; for which reason what follows is said, How has the faithful city Sion, full of judgment, become a harlot, in which righteousness lodged, but now murderers? after all of which, finally 172 the Word, again foretelling their rejection, says: For they shall be as a terebinth that has cast off its leaves, and as a garden that has no water. And their strength shall be as the tow of flax, and their works as sparks, and the lawless and the sinners shall be burned up together, and there shall be none to quench it. The prophecy, having previously declared so many and so great things against them, subsequently adds the passage just set forth for us, through which it is said, That in the last days the mountain of the Lord shall be manifest. Clearly after their complete and final rejection and desolation, hinting at the economies of the new covenant, according to which the mountain of the Lord has become manifest to all the nations. And what mountain other than the one who was in the beginning with God, God the Word? He himself, our Savior and Lord, whom we have previously described, about whom it is also said in the Psalms, a mountain of God, a fat mountain; and, the mountain in which God was pleased to dwell. And in addition to this mountain, the house of God also has become manifest; and the house of God would be the church, established upon the heights of the apostolic and prophetic words; and when these things became manifest upon this very mountain, it is clear that Israel did not possess the divine Word, nor the house of Jacob mentioned in many places, but simply all the nations; and it is indeed clear how and in what manner the aforementioned things were accomplished through the appearance of our Savior, and when both the described mountain and the designated house became manifest, we from the nations, having come to the God of all through faith in 173 Christ the Son of God, formerly being ignorant of such great things, but now through divine grace having come to know them, we have come to Mount Sion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem; and since we have been taught by the Word of God who came forth or rather came down from the heavenly Jerusalem, that the Jerusalem above is free, which is mother
