For Jeroboam, Samaria was the metropolis, but the house of the kingdom was in Tirzah; the name of the people under him was Israel because of their number and Ephraim because of the tribe of the kingdom. And in the eighth month, on the fifteenth of the month, Jeroboam went up to Bethel to the altar which he had made to sacrifice to the calves which he had cast, and he appointed the priests of the high places, whom he himself had established among them. And behold, a man of God came to Bethel, by the word of the Lord from Judah; and Jeroboam was standing by his altar to sacrifice. And the 1.175 man said to the altar by the word of the Lord, "Altar, altar, thus says the Lord: Behold, a son is born in the house of David, Josiah is his name. And he will sacrifice upon you the priests of the high places who sacrifice upon you, and he will burn the bones of men upon you." And he immediately gave a sign, saying, "Behold, the altar is torn, and the fat which is upon it will be poured out." And when Jeroboam heard, he stretched out his hand to seize him. And behold, his hand withered, and the altar was rent, and its fat was poured out. And Jeroboam said, "Entreat the face of the Lord your God, and let my hand be restored to me." And the man of God entreated, and his hand became whole. And the man of God departed from the presence of Jeroboam. But there was another false prophet, dwelling in Bethel, an old man; and having learned what the man of God had done, he pursued after him, and found him sitting upon an oak, and said to him, "Come with me, and eat bread." And he said, "I will not eat bread nor drink water in this place, because the Lord commanded me so." And he said, "I too am a prophet like you, and an angel of the Lord spoke to me to bring you back and eat bread." And he deceived him, and he turned back and ate and drank. Therefore the word of the Lord came to the false prophet who had turned him back, and he said to the man of God, "Thus says the Lord: Because you have transgressed the law of the Lord and turned back and ate and 1.176 drank in this place, your body shall not enter into the tomb of your fathers." And when he went out, a lion met and killed him. But Jeroboam did not turn from his evil. In the 38th year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab, the most wicked of all kings, reigned in Israel, who set up an altar to Baal. He had a wife, Jezebel. In his time, Hiel the Bethelite rebuilt Jericho; with Achia his firstborn he laid its foundation, and with Segub his youngest he set up its gates, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke by the hand of Joshua the son of Nun. Then also the prophet Elijah said to Ahab, "As the Lord God of hosts lives, before whom I stand, there will be in these years neither dew nor rain upon the earth, except by my mouth." And he went eastward by the word of the Lord, and hid in the brook Cherith which is before the Jordan, and drank water from there; and the ravens brought him meat in the morning, and bread in the evening. But when the brook dried up in the drought, by the word of the Lord he comes to Zarephath. And having been received as a guest by a widow woman, he ate, and the woman and her children; and the handful of meal did not fail, nor was the jar of oil diminished, until the famine was ended. He also raised her son from the dead, whom some say was Jonah the 1.177 prophet. Then he also made the sacrifice, in which fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offerings and the water and the dust of the earth. There he also slew the priests of Baal and the prophets, 850 of them, and brought down rain. But Jezebel, having learned this, threatened him, and Elijah fled from the face of Jezebel a journey of forty days. But Obadiah alone from a young age became a prophet on account of his piety, not being genealogically from prophets. And he was the steward of Ahab, secretly worshipping the God of Israel. This man also, having hidden one hundred prophets in two caves because of the fear of Jezebel (for she was killing them)
