he went away rejoicing and giving thanks to God, who had prospered his way for good. 318 xxii But Ioasaph, after Barlaam had departed, gave himself to prayer and hottest tears, and said: O God, attend unto my help. O Lord, make haste to help me, for unto thee is the poor man left, thou wast a helper to the orphan; look upon me and have mercy on me, who willest that all men should be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, save me and strengthen me who am unworthy to walk in the way of thy holy commandments, for I am weak and wretched and not able to do good. But thou art able to save me, who holdest together and containest all things visible and invisible. Suffer me not to walk after the evil desires of the flesh; but teach me to do thy will, and preserve me unto thy eternal and blessed life. O Father, and Son, and divine Spirit, the consubstantial and undivided Godhead, I call upon thee and I glorify thee; for all creation hymns thee, and the intellectual powers of the bodiless beings give glory to thee for ever. Amen. From that time, therefore, he kept himself with all watchfulness, procuring for himself purity of soul and body, living with temperance and all-night prayers and supplications. For though often cut short during the day by the company of those with him, and sometimes by the king's visit to him or his own summons to the king, the night made up for him the shortcomings 320 of the day, as he stood in prayers and tears until dawn, calling upon God. Wherefore that prophetic saying was fulfilled in him: In the nights lift up your hands to the holy places, and bless the Lord. But that Zardan, perceiving his way of life and being filled with grief, and his soul being smitten with terrible anxieties, did not know what to do; finally, worn out by distress, he departed to his own house, pretending to be ill. And when this came to the king's knowledge, he sent another of his most faithful men to serve his son in his stead; and he himself, caring for Zardan's health, sent him a most experienced physician and deemed him worthy of much care to be healed. The physician, since this man was pleasing to the king, examined him carefully, and, having diagnosed his condition perfectly, quickly reported to the king, saying, "I have been able to find no cause of any disease in the man; whence I suppose that, his soul having been smitten with some despondency, he has become weak." But the king, hearing these words, supposed that his son had treated him harshly, and that for this reason he had withdrawn in grief. And wishing to learn the matter accordingly, he declared to Zardan, "Tomorrow," he said, "I will come to see you, and to diagnose the illness that has befallen you." But Zardan, having heard this message, early in the morning put on his cloak, 322 and went to the king. And entering, he prostrated himself before him on the ground. But the king said, "Why did you force yourself to come? For I myself wanted to visit you, and to make known to all my friendship for you." And he replied: "My weakness, O king, is not one of the usual illnesses of men; but from a sorrowful and anxious soul, the heart being in pain, the body has suffered along with it. It would have been folly for me in this condition not to come as a servant to your majesty, but to wait for your royalty to be troubled to come to me, your servant." When the king therefore inquired what was the cause of his despondency, Zardan replied, "Great is my danger," he said, "and I am worthy of great punishments, and have become liable to many deaths, because, having been negligent towards your commands, I have almost become the cause of much distress to you."

Ὁ δὲ ἰατρός, ἐπεὶ τῷ βασιλεῖ οὗτος κεχαρισμένος ἦν, ἐπιμελῶς ἐπεσκέψατο, καί, ἄριστα διαγνοὺς τὰ κατ' αὐτόν, τῷ βασιλεῖ θᾶττον ἀναγγέλλει, ὡς Ἐγώ, φησί, οὐδενὸς νοσήματος αἴτιον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ εὑρεῖν δεδύνημαι· ἔνθεν τοι καὶ ὑπολαμβάνω, ἀθυμίᾳ τινὶ τὴν ψυχὴν βληθέντα, τοῦτον μαλακισθῆναι. ὁ δὲ βασιλεύς, τούτων ἀκούσας τῶν ῥημάτων, ὑπέλαβε βαρέως αὐτῷ τὸν υἱὸν διατεθῆναι, καὶ τούτου χάριν λυπηθέντα αὐτὸν ὑποχωρῆσαι. μαθεῖν δὲ τὸ πρᾶγμα ἀκολούθως βουλόμενος, δεδήλωκε τῷ Ζαρδάν, ὡς Αὔριον ἐλεύσομαι, φησί, θεωρῆσαί σε, καὶ τὰ τῆς ἐπισυμβάσης σοι διαγνῶναι ἀρρωστίας. Ὁ Ζαρδὰν δέ, ταύτης ἀκούσας τῆς ἀγγελίας, ἅμα πρωὶ περιβαλλόμενος αὐτοῦ τὸ ἱμάτιον, 322 πορεύεται πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα. καὶ εἰσελθὼν προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς. ὁ δὲ βασιλεύς, Τί, φησί, παρεβιάσω ἑαυτὸν παραγενέσθαι; αὐτὸς γὰρ ἤθελον ἐπισκέψασθαί σε, καὶ πᾶσι γνωρίσαι τὴν πρὸς σέ μου φιλίαν. ὁ δὲ ἀντέφησεν· Ἡ ἐμή, βασιλεῦ, ἀσθένεια οὐκ ἔστι τῶν συνήθων ἀνθρώποις ἀρρωστιῶν· ἀλλ' ἐκ λυπηρᾶς καὶ ἐμμερίμνου ψυχῆς τῆς καρδίας ὀδυνωμένης συνωδυνήθη τὸ σῶμα. ἀφροσύνη δέ μοι ἦν οὕτως ἔχοντά με μὴ δουλικῶς πρὸς τὸ σὸν παραγενέσθαι κράτος, ἀλλὰ τὴν σὴν βασιλείαν προσμένειν ἕως ἐμοῦ τοῦ οἰκέτου σκυλῆναι. τοῦ βασιλέως οὖν πυνθανομένου τίς ἡ τῆς ἀθυμίας αὐτοῦ αἰτία, ὑπολαβὼν ὁ Ζαρδάν, Μέγας ἐμοὶ κίνδυνος, ἔφη· καὶ μεγάλων ἐγὼ τιμωριῶν ἄξιος, πολλῶν δὲ θανάτων ἔνοχος καθέστηκα, ὅτι σοῦ τοῖς προστάγμασιν ἀμελῶς διατεθεὶς ἀνίας σοι πολλῆς ὅσον οὐδέπω πρόξενος γέγονα.
