hostile to the advantages of their adversaries, forced by the greatness of the deeds. At this time Constantius, learning that Julian, whom he had appointed Caesar of Europe, was aspiring to greater things and was raising an army against the one who had honored him, departed from Syria, and ended his life in Cilicia. For he did not have the helper whom his father had left to him, not having kept the inheritance of his father's piety inviolate. BOOK THREE OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY OF THEODORET

Constantius indeed, groaning and lamenting, departed this life because he had been turned aside from his paternal faith; but Julian, crossing from Europe into Asia, learned of the death of Constantius and, taking courage as having no rival, took possession of the empire. He, while yet young with his brother Gallus and still a boy, drew the milk of pious teaching, and indeed having become an adolescent and a youth he partook of the same; but fearing Constantius (for he was destroying his relatives, fearing usurpations) he was counted worthy of the order of readers and used to read the sacred books to the people in the church assemblies. And he did build a shrine of martyrs, but the martyrs did not accept it, foreseeing his deviation into impiety; for the foundations, imitating the instability of his mind, collapsed before it was consecrated. Such then were the events of his first and second age. But when Constantius departed for the West (for the war against Magnentius drew him there) and appointed 178 Gallus Caesar of the East, who was both pious and remained so to the end, Julian scattered the salutary fear from his soul, and taking courage as he ought not to have, he desired the imperial scepters. For which reason indeed, roaming through Greece, he sought out soothsayers and oracle-mongers, longing to learn if he would obtain what he desired. And he fell in with a man who promised to foretell these things, who this man into one of the idolatrous shrines

Κωνστάντιος μὲν δὴ στένων καὶ ὀδυρόμενος ὑπεξῆλθε τὸν βίον ὅτι τῆς πατρῴας πίστεως παρετράπη· Ἰουλιανὸς δὲ ἀπὸ τῆς Εὐρώπης εἰς τὴν Ἀσίαν διαβαίνων ἐπύθετο τοῦ Κωνσταντίου τὴν τελευτὴν καὶ θαρρήσας, ὡς οὐδένα ἀντίπαλον ἔχων, τὴν βασιλείαν παρέλαβεν. Οὗτος δέ, νέαν μὲν ἄγων τὴν ἡλικίαν σὺν Γάλλῳ τῷ ἀδελφῷ καὶ ἄνηβος ὢν ἔτι, τὴν τῆς εὐσεβοῦς διδασκαλίας εἷλκε θηλήν, καὶ μὲν δὴ καὶ πρόσηβος γενόμενος καὶ ἔφηβος τῆς αὐτῆς μετελάγχανε· δείσας δὲ τὸν Κωνστάντιον (τοὺς γὰρ γένει προσήκοντας ἀνῄρει δειμαίνων τὰς τυραννίδας) τοῦ τῶν ἀναγνωστῶν ἠξιώθη χοροῦ καὶ τὰς ἱερὰς βίβλους ἐν τοῖς ἐκκλησιαστικοῖς συλλόγοις ὑπανεγίνωσκε τῷ λαῷ. καὶ σηκὸν μαρτύρων ἐδομήσατο μέν, οὐ προσεδέξαντο δὲ οἱ μάρτυρες τὴν εἰς ἀσέβειαν αὐτοῦ παρατροπὴν προθεώμενοι· τῶν γὰρ δὴ θεμελίων τὸ τῆς ἐκείνου γνώμης μιμησαμένων ἀβέβαιον, πρὶν ἱερωθῆναι κατέπεσε. τὰ μὲν δὴ τῆς πρώτης ἡλικίας αὐτοῦ καὶ τῆς δευτέρας τοιαῦτα ἦν.
