are found to be towards their benefactor and do not keep the commandments given by him, they fall away from such good things, as Adam did from paradise, suffering this not because they were not foreknown by God, but from their own foolishness and wickedness. For this very reason God also placed in the midst of this paradise the saving remedy, repentance, so that those who through sloth and negligence fall away from eternal life may, through repentance, return to it again with a more resplendent and manifest glory; for if the philanthropic God had not built this, no flesh would have been saved.
(150) Therefore, leaving behind all other care, let us attend to repentance with all our strength, so that we may obtain both present and future good things, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power unto the ages of ages; amen.
DISCOURSE 3 (151)
On the saying of the Apostle in which he says: "And I know such a man was caught up to the third heaven and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to hear". What then are the unspeakable words which Paul heard? And what are the good things "which eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man"? And what or how will and is the kingdom of God for us, and what is its energy in us?
Since indeed the Master of all things, every day through the
gospels cries out, speaking some things obscurely, when He discourses in parables, and interpreting others privately to His own disciples, saying thus: "To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest in parables," and at another time He says all things plainly and openly to all of us, as the apostles say to Him: "Behold, they say, now you are speaking plainly and using no figure of speech," it is necessary to seek and to learn which things were spoken plainly and openly, and which in parables by the Lord and God. Now, the clear and plain commandments are when the Evangelist says: "The Lord said: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you," and when he blesses those who mourn, but pronounces woe on those who laugh, (152) and when He says: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand," and again: "Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it for eternal life," and: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." These things, therefore, and what follows them have been said not in parables, but plainly and having no hidden meaning. But the things in parables are when He says: "To what shall we compare the kingdom of God? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his garden; and it grew and became a large tree" and when He says again: "The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls" and again: "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened." Saying these and many other things like them and comparing the kingdom of heaven to such things, He calls them parables.
And behold for me from this the wisdom of God, how through sensible examples and things that seem to us to be humble He sketches out the things beyond mind and thought. And He does all this, so that the unbelievers, having become unworthy of such things through their unbelief, might remain blind and without a share in such good things, but the faithful and

ΛΟΓΟΣ Γ΄ (151)
Εἰς το ῥητόν τοῦ Ἀποστόλου ἐν ᾧ λέγει· "Καί εἶδον τόν τοιοῦτον εἰς τρίτον οὐρανόν ἁρπαγέντα καί ἀκούσαντα ἄρρητα ῥήματα ἅ οὐκ ἐξόν ἀνθρώπῳ ἀκοῦσαι". Τί οὖν εἰσιν ἅ ἀκήκοεν ὁ Παῦλος ἄρρητα ῥήματα; Τίνα δέ τά ἀγαθά "ἅ ὀφθαλμός οὐκ εἶδε καί οὖς οὐκ ἤκουσε καί ἐπί καρδίαν ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἀνέβη"; Τίς δέ ἤ πῶς ἔσται καί ἔστιν εἰς ἡμᾶς ἡ τοῦ Θεοῦ βασιλεία καί τίς ἡ ἐν ἡμῖν ταύτης ἐνέργεια;
