my soul and the soul of these your children in your eyes.” And an angel of the Lord spoke to Elijah, and he went down with them to the king, and said according to the word spoken before, “because you sent to inquire of the fly, turning away from God, you shall die and not live.” And Ahaziah died according to the word of Elijah, and rested in the cave of Moses. In the time of this Ahaziah, the people of that region suffered from famine, slaughtered their own children, and ate them; for they used to dip their food in doves’ dung instead of salt. In the four thousand six hundred and second year, Elijah was taken up. From there, Elisha, returning to Jericho, heals the bad waters with salt. And as he was going up to Bethel, little children came out of the city and stoned him and mocked him, and said, “Go up, you baldhead, go up.” But he cursed them; and behold, two bears came out of the wood and tore forty-two of the children to pieces. And from there he returned to Samaria. This Samaria the fifth king of Israel builds into a city (this is the one now 1.181 called Sebaste), and he named it Seber, after the name of Sebar the lord of the mountain. Then also Elisha performed the miracle of the oil for the woman for abundance, and through that oil he paid her debts, and he raised the son of the Shunammite woman. Then also the gourd, which was poison to the men, was given as medicine, and it was healed with meal. And the 20 barley loaves and the five cakes of dried figs were more than enough for the hundred men. And the leprosy of Naaman was healed, but Gehazi received clothes and silver and his leprosy. In addition to these things, he also brought up the ax from the Jordan, and he reported the ambushes of the king of Syria to the king of Israel. And when the king of Syria surrounded him on the mountain to seize him, when Elisha’s servant saw the chariots and the host, he was afraid, and said, “Lord, what shall we do?” But he said, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And he prayed, and God opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw the whole mountain full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. And when they came down to him, the Lord struck them with blindness. And Elisha said, “Come after me.” And he led them to Samaria, and their eyes were opened, and they saw, and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria. And the king of Samaria said, “Shall I strike them, father?” And he said, “You shall not strike them. Set 1.182 bread and water before them.” And after eating they departed to their master, and the raiders of Syria did not come into Israel again. And after Ahaziah, Joram his brother reigned, and he did evil in the sight of the Lord. And he was slain by Jehu, having reigned for twelve years; he had subdued Mesha king of Moab and was receiving from him a yearly tribute of one hundred thousand lambs and one hundred thousand rams. In his time the great Elijah was taken up. And the king of Syria came and besieged Samaria, and there was a great famine, so that a donkey’s head was sold for thirty pieces of silver. And Joram was passing by on the wall. And a certain woman cried out to him, “Save me, my lord the king.” And he answered and said, “If the Lord does not save you, from where shall I save you? From the threshing floor or from the winepress?” And the woman says, “No, O king. But this woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and my son tomorrow;’ and having boiled him yesterday, we ate him, and today she has hidden her son.” When the king heard this, he tore his garments, and the people saw the sackcloth on his flesh underneath. And he answered and said, “May God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha shall remain on him today.” And he sent the officer on whom he leaned. And the prophet said to him, “Thus says 1.183 the Lord: Tomorrow, about this time, a measure of fine flour for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gates of Samaria.” And the officer said, “If the Lord should open the
