or pray for good things for you? that you be most pleasant to your friends, but formidable to your enemies, and respected equally by all, so that even those who have failed in some of their duties, perceiving the gentleness in you, might blame themselves for having sinned against such a person as you. 73.2 But since you ordered the servants to be taken to the place where they demonstrated their insubordination, I ask to learn the purpose for which your goodness seeks this. For if you yourself will be present, and will yourself exact the penalty for what they dared, the servants will be present. For what else must happen, if this has been decided by you? But nevertheless, we do not know what kind of favor we will have received, if we are not sufficient to rescue the servants from punishment. But if the business on the public road will keep you yourself away, who is the one to receive the men there? And who is the one who will punish them instead of you? But if it seems good to you that they come into your sight and this is absolutely decided, command that their appearance take place as far as Sasima, and there show the gentleness and magnanimity of your character. For having taken into your hands those who provoked you, and in this having demonstrated the authority of your own rank, release them unharmed, as we urged in our earlier letters, granting the favor to us, and expecting from God the recompense for what you do. 73.3 And I say these things not as if the matter ought to be concluded in this way, but yielding to your impulse, and fearing lest some undigested part of your anger remain, and just as with inflamed eyes even the gentlest of remedies seem painful, so also now our word may exasperate you rather than calm you. Since the most seemly thing, and one able to bring you the greatest honor and sufficient for me for boasting to my own friends and peers, was for the vengeance to be entrusted to us. But in any case, even if it has been sworn by you to give them over for punishment according to the laws, neither is the penance from us less in respect to vengeance, nor is the divine law less honored than the laws governing life. But it was possible for them, having turned here to our laws, in which you yourself also have the hope of salvation, both to free you from the necessity of your oath, and for them to pay the penalty commensurate with their sins; But again I am making the letter long. For out of extreme eagerness to be persuasive to you, I cannot bear to be silent about anything that comes to mind; fearing lest because of this my request may be unsuccessful, since I have made my instruction deficient. But, O most honorable and genuine offspring of the Church, confirm for me the hopes which I now have in you, and the testimonies of all in agreement concerning your propriety and gentleness, and instruct the soldier to depart from us quickly, who for now has left out nothing of burdensomeness or insolence, choosing rather not to grieve you than to have us all as his own and friends.
74. TO MARTINIANUS
74.1 As for me, what do you think? at what price would I ever value our coming together somewhere and associating with you for a longer time, so as to enjoy all the good things in you? For indeed, if it is a great testimony of culture to see the cities of many men and to know their mind, this, I think, your conversation bestows in a short time. For what difference does it make to see many men individually, or one man who has undertaken the experience of all together? Rather, I would even say that the difference is very great, inasmuch as it provides knowledge of good things without toil and gathers a history of virtue pure from admixture with what is worse. For whether it is a noble deed, or a word worthy of memory, or the lives of men who have surpassed others, all in the treasury of your soul

Πάντως δὲ εἰ καὶ ὀμώμοσταί σοι δοῦναι αὐτοὺς εἰς τιμωρίαν κατὰ τοὺς νόμους, οὔτε ἡ παρ' ἡμῶν ἐπι τίμησις ἐλάττων ἐστὶν εἰς ἐκδίκησιν, οὔτε ὁ θεῖος νόμος ἀτιμότερος τῶν ἐμπολιτευομένων τῷ βίῳ νομίμων. Ἀλλ' ἦν δυνατὸν αὐτοὺς ἐνταῦθα ἐπιστραφέντας τοῖς ἡμετέροις νομίμοις, ἐν οἷς καὶ αὐτὸς τὴν ἐλπίδα ἔχεις τῆς σωτηρίας, καὶ σὲ τῆς ἐπὶ τῷ ὅρκῳ ἀνάγκης ἐλευθερῶσαι, καὶ αὐτοὺς σύμμετρον τοῖς ἡμαρτημένοις ἐκπληρῶσαι τὴν δίκην· Ἀλλὰ πάλιν μακρὰν ποιῶ τὴν ἐπιστολήν. Ἀλλ', ὦ τιμιώτατε καὶ γνήσιον θρέμμα τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, βεβαίωσον καὶ ἐμοὶ τὰς ἐλπίδας, ἃς ἔχω νῦν ἐπὶ σοί, καὶ τὰς πάντων συμ φώνως περὶ τῆς σῆς ἐμμελείας καὶ πραότητος μαρτυρίας, καὶ ἐπίστειλον τῷ στρατιώτῃ ἀπαλλαγῆναι ἡμῶν ἐν τάχει, ὃς νῦν γε οὐδὲν ἐπαχθείας οὐδὲ ὕβρεως ἐλλέλοιπε, μᾶλλον αἱρούμενός σε μὴ λυπῆσαι ἢ πάντας ἡμᾶς οἰκείους ἔχειν καὶ φίλους.

74.1 Ἐμὲ τί οἴει, πόσου ποτ' ἂν τιμήσασθαι τὸ εἰς ταὐτόν ποθ' ἡμᾶς ἀλλήλοις
ἐλθεῖν καὶ ἐπὶ πλεῖόν σοι συγγενέσθαι ὥστε πάντων ἀπολαῦσαι τῶν ἐν σοὶ καλῶν; Καὶ γάρ, εἰ μέγα πρὸς μαρτυρίαν παιδεύσεως τὸ πολλῶν ἀνθρώπων ἰδεῖν ἄστεα καὶ νόον γνῶναι, τοῦτο οἶμαι δι' ὀλίγου χαρίζεσθαι τὴν σὴν ὁμιλίαν. Τί γὰρ διαφέρει πολλοὺς ἰδεῖν κατὰ μέρος ἢ ἕνα τὸν πάντων ὁμοῦ τὴν πεῖραν ἀναδεξάμενον; Μᾶλλον δὲ ἐγὼ καὶ πλεῖστον ἂν ἔχειν εἴ ποιμι τὸ διάφορον ὅσα ἀταλαίπωρον τὴν γνῶσιν τῶν καλῶν προξενεῖ καὶ καθαρὰν τῆς πρὸς τὸ χεῖρον ἐπιμιξίας συνάγει τὴν ἱστορίαν τῆς ἀρετῆς.
