For I shudder, reverently engraving the divine things and outlining with letters the things that are unutterable to all. If you have seen Christ, if you have received the Spirit and have been brought to the Father through these two, you would have known what I am saying and what I am explaining to you, and that it is a great and awesome thing and beyond all glory and splendor, dominion and authority, wealth and power and every kingdom to serve with a pure conscience of heart the pure and Holy and undefiled Trinity. For do not speak to me of the sinlessness of the body and, of things whose depth you do not understand, bring forth testimonies, but what God said through the Apostles and Basil the wise, whose tongue was of fire, and the simple testimonies of father Chrysostom, and of Gregory who theologized these things well, listen and be convinced, of what sort he must be who serves God, the maker of all things! And from your being deemed worthy and from your virtue you can wonder at the greatness of the dignity. (135) Do not be deceived, brothers, do not dare at all to touch or to approach the unapproachable nature. For he who will not renounce the world and the things in the world and will deny his own soul and body and become entirely dead to all the senses, looking passionately at none of the pleasures of life, desiring none of the world's affairs at all, nor taking pleasure in any words of men; who has not become deaf and blind to the world's affairs and habits, actions and words, seeing indeed as much as the eye is able to see by nature, but allowing nothing from within to enter the heart and for its types and forms to be depicted in it, and hearing as much as human hearing receives, and remaining like a soulless and senseless stone, remembering neither the sound nor the power of the voices—he cannot offer the mystical and bloodless sacrifice to God purely, to Him who is pure by nature. For when he perceives to do these things in truth, he has been separated from the whole world and the things of the world and he will know and believe me, what I am about to write again. The dark air, which David calls a wall and the Fathers named the sea of life, he has surmounted, he has crossed, he has entered into a harbor, in which everyone who has arrived finds every good thing. For there is paradise, there the tree of life, there the sweet bread, there the divine drink, there the inexhaustible wealth of gifts. There the bush burns without being consumed

Φρίττω γάρ εὐλαβούμενος ἐγχαράττων τά θεῖα καί γράμμασι σκιαγραφῶν τά ἀπόρρητα πᾶσιν. Εἰ ἐθεάσω τόν Χριστόν, εἰ ἔλαβες τό Πνεῦμα καί προσηνέχθης τῷ Πατρί διά τούτων τῶν δύο, γινώσκειν εἶχες ἅ λαλῶ καί ἅ σοι ἐξηγοῦμαι, καί ὅτι μέγα καί φρικτόν καί ἐπέκεινα πάσης δόξης τε καί λαμπρότητος, ἀρχῆς καί ἐξουσίας, πλούτου τε καί δυνάμεως καί πάσης βασιλείας τό λειτουργεῖν ἐν καθαρᾷ καρδίας συνειδήσει τῇ καθαρᾷ καί Ἁγίᾳ καί ἀχράντῳ Τριάδι. Μή γάρ μοι εἴπῃς σώματος τήν ἀναμαρτησίαν καί, ὧν τό βάθος οὐ νοεῖς, παράξῃς μαρτυρίας, ἀλλ᾿ ἅπερ εἶπεν ὁ Θεός διά τῶν Ἀποστόλων καί Βασιλείου τοῦ σοφοῦ, τοῦ πυρίνου τήν γλῶτταν, καί Χρυσοστόμου τε πατρός τάς ἁπλᾶς μαρτυρίας καί Γρηγορίου τοῦ καλῶς ταῦτα θεολογοῦντος ἄκουσον καί πιστώθητι, ποταπόν χρή ὑπάρχειν τόν λειτουργοῦντα τῷ Θεῷ, τῷ ποιητῇ τῶν πάντων! Καί ἐκ τῆς καταξιώσεως καί ἐκ τῆς ἀρετῆς σου ἔχεις τοῦ ἀξιώματος τό μέγεθος θαυμάσαι. (135) Μή πλανηθῆτε, ἀδελφοί, μή τολμήσητε ὅλως ἅψασθαι ἤ προσελθεῖν τό ἀπροσίτῳ φύσει. Ὅς γάρ οὐκ ἀποτάξεται κόσμῳ καί τοῖς ἐν κόσμῳ καί τήν ψυχήν ἀρνήσεται τήν ἑαυτοῦ καί σῶμα καί ὅλος γένηται νεκρός ταῖς αἰσθήσεσι πάσαις μηδέν προσβλέπων ἐμπαθῶς τῶν ἡδέων τοῦ βίου, μηδενός ὅλως ἐπιθυμῶν τῶν τοῦ κόσμου πραγμάτων μηδέ ἐνηδυνόμενος λόγοις τισίν ἀνθρώπων, ὅς οὐ κωφός τε καί τυφλός γένηται τοῖς τοῦ κόσμου πράγμασί τε καί ἤθεσι, πράξεσί τε καί λόγοις ὁρῶν μέν ὅσα ὀφθαλμός φύσει ὁρᾶν ἰσχύει, μηδέν δέ ἔνδοθεν ἐῶν εἰσελθεῖν ἐν καρδίᾳ καί τύπους τούτων καί μορφάς ἀνιστορεῖσθαι ταύτην ἀκούων δ᾿ ὅσα ἀκοή δέχεται ἀνθρωπίνη, καί μένων ὥσπερ ἄψυχος καί ἀναίσθητος λίθος, μή ἠχήν, μή τήν δύναμιν τῶν φωνῶν μεμνημένος, οὐ δύναται τήν μυστικήν καί ἀναίμακτον θύειν Θεῷ θυσίαν καθαρῶς τῷ καθαρῷ τήν φύσιν. Ὅταν γάρ ταῦτα αἰσθηθῇ ποιεῖν ἐν ἀληθείᾳ, ἀπεχωρίσθη τοῦ παντός κόσμου καί τῶν τοῦ κόσμου καί γνώσει καί πιστεύσει μοι, ἅ μέλλω πάλιν γράφειν. Τόν ἀέρα τόν σκοτεινόν, ὅν ∆αυίδ τεῖχος λέγει καί θάλασσαν ὠνόμασαν τοῦ βίου οἱ Πατέρες, ὑπερέβη, ἐπέρασεν, εἰσῆλθεν εἰς λιμένα, ἐν ᾧ πᾶς ὁ γενόμενος πᾶν ἀγαθόν εὑρίσκει. Ἐκεῖ γάρ ὁ παράδεισος, ἐκεῖ ζωῆς τό ξύλον, ἐκεῖ ὁ ἄρτος ὁ γλυκύς, ἐκεῖ πόμα τό θεῖον, ἐκεῖ ὁ ἀνεξάντλητος πλοῦτος τῶν χαρισμάτων. Ἐκεῖ ἡ βάτος καίεται μή καταφλεγομένη
