two. But that Joseph, having prospered for nine years, did not send for his father, because he and his brothers were shepherds; and shepherding was a reproach to the Egyptians. And that he did not send for him for this reason has been shown; for when his kinsmen came, he told them that if they were called by the king and asked 9.21.14 what their occupation was, to say that they were cattle-breeders. And there is a question as to why Joseph gave Benjamin a fivefold portion at the meal, since he was not able to consume so much meat. Therefore he did this because seven sons had been born to his father from Leah, but two from his mother Rachel; for this reason he set five portions before Benjamin and he himself took two; therefore there were seven, as many as the sons from Leah also received. 9.21.15 Likewise also concerning the giving of garments, to each double, but to Benjamin five and three hundred pieces of gold and he sent the same to his father, so that 9.21.16 the house of his mother would be equal. And that they lived in the land of Canaan, from the time Abraham was chosen from the nations and moved to Canaan, Abraham for twenty-five years, Isaac for sixty years, Jacob for one hundred and thirty years; making 9.21.17 the total years in the land of Canaan 215. And in the third year of the famine being in Egypt, Jacob came into Egypt, being one hundred and thirty years old, Reuben 45 years, Simeon 44 years, Levi 43 years, Judah 42 years and two months, Naphtali 41 years and 7 months, Gad 41 years and 3 months, Asher 40 years and eight months, Za9.21.18bulon 40 years, Dinah 39 years, Benjamin 28 years. And he says that Joseph was in Egypt for 39 years. And that from Adam until the kinsmen of Joseph entered Egypt there were #223624 years. And from the flood until the arrival of Jacob in Egypt, #221360 years; and from when Abraham was chosen from the nations and came from Haran to Canaan until Jacob and his family 9.21.19 came into Egypt, 215 years. And that Jacob came to Laban in Haran being 80 years old and begot Levi; and Levi lived in Egypt for 17 years after he came from Canaan into Egypt, so that he was 60 years old, and he begot Kohath, and in the same year that Kohath was born, Jacob died in Egypt, having blessed the sons of Joseph, being 147 years old, leaving Joseph who was 50 years old. And Levi, having become 137 years old, died, and Kohath, being 40 years old, begot Amram, who was 14 years old when Joseph died in Egypt, being 110 years old; and Kohath, having become one hundred and 33 years old, died. And Amram took to wife his uncle's daughter, Jochebed, and being 75 years old, he begot Aaron and Moses; and Amram begot Moses when he was 78 years old, and Amram, having become 130 years old, died.” Let these things be set down by me from the writing of Alexander Polyhistor. And let these things be added in order; 9.22.1

XXII. FROM THEODOTUS, CONCERNING JACOB "But as for Sichem," Theodotus says in his work 'Concerning the Jews,' "it took its name from Sicimius, the son of Hermes; for he also founded the city; and he says that it is situated, in his 'Concerning the Jews,' as follows: 'And it was good and fit for goats and well-watered, nor was the road long to reach the city from the country; nor do the shaggy thickets ever cause trouble. And from it, very near, two fortified mountains appear, full of both grass and wood; and between them a narrow, gorge-like path is cut; and on the other side sacred Sichem appears, a holy city, built beneath the root of the mountain, and round about the wall, a smooth defense, runs under the foot of the steep mountain.' 9.22.2 And he says that it was later occupied by the Hebrews, when Emmor was ruling; for Emmor begot a son, Sychem. And he says: 'Henceforth, stranger,
