To the shepherd-loving city of the broad Sikimoi came Jacob; and over the men of that city was the ruler Emmor with his son Sychem, very stubborn men.” 9.22.3 Then concerning Jacob and his arrival in Mesopotamia and the marriage of the two women and the birth of the children and the arrival from Mesopotamia at Sikima. And he said: “Jacob came to cattle-breeding Syria and left the broad stream of the roaring Euphrates river. For he had come thither, having left the harsh rebuke of his own brother. Laban willingly received him into his house, who was his cousin, but at that time ruled alone over Syria, boasting of newly-born blood. To him he promised and consented to the marriage of his youngest daughter; yet he was not at all eager for it to be accomplished, but he devised a trick and sent into the man’s bed Leah, who was his elder. Yet it did not escape him, but he perceived the evil plot and received the other daughter, and was united with both sisters. And to him were born eleven sons, wonderfully prudent in mind, and a daughter, Deina, having a very beautiful form, a graceful body and a blameless spirit.” 9.22.4 And he says that Jacob came from the Euphrates to Sikima to Emmor; and that he received him and gave him a certain portion of the land. And that Jacob himself farmed the land, and that his sons, being eleven in number, were shepherds, and his daughter Deina and his wives worked wool. And that Deina, being a virgin, came to Sikima when there was a festival, wishing to see the city; and that Sychem, the son of Emmor, upon seeing her, fell in love with her and seized her and 9.22.5 carried her off to himself and defiled her. And that again, coming with his father to Jacob, he asked for her in marriage; but he said he would not give her, until all the inhabitants of Sikima should be circumcised and become Jews; and Emmor said he would persuade them. And Jacob says concerning the necessity for them to be circumcised: 9.22.6 “For indeed this is not established as lawful for the Hebrews, to bring sons-in-law from elsewhere to their brides in the home, but only one who boasts to be of the same race.” 9.22.7 Then, continuing about circumcision: “He who once, when he led divine Abraham from his fatherland, himself from heaven called the man with his whole house to strip the flesh from the foreskin, and he did so; and it has been made unshakeable, since God himself spoke it.” 9.22.8 When Emmor, therefore, had gone to the city and was urging his subjects to be circumcised, one of Jacob’s sons, Simeon by name, resolved to kill both Emmor and Sychem, being unwilling to bear the outrage against his sister in a civilized manner; and having resolved these things, he communicated them to his brother Levi; and having found him in agreement, urged him to the deed, putting forward an oracle, 9.22.9 saying God would destroy and give ten nations to the descendants of Abraham. And so Simeon speaks to Levi: “For I have heard well the word of God; for he once said he would give ten nations to the children of Abraham.” And that God put this mind into them because the inhabitants of Sikim were impious. And he says: “God was harming the inhabitants of Sikim, for they did not honor whoever might come to them, neither bad nor good; nor did they judge judgments throughout the city, nor laws; but pestilent deeds were their concern.” 9.22.10 That Levi and Simeon therefore came into the city in full armor and first killed those they met, and then also murdered Emmor and Sychem 9.22.11. And he speaks about their slaying thus: “So then Simeon rushed upon Emmor and struck his head, and seized his neck in his left hand, and left him still gasping, since another labor arose. Meanwhile Levi of irresistible strength seized by the hair Sychem, who was grasping his knees, raging unspeakably. And he struck him mid-collarbone, and the sharp sword entered his vitals through his chest, and straightway the soul left the body.” And that the other brothers, having learned of their deed, came to their aid and sacked the city and having rescued their sister, with the captives to their paternal

ποιμενόφι πτόλιν ἤλυθ' Ἰακὼβ εὐρεῖαν Σικίμων· ἐπὶ δ' ἀνδράσι τοῖσιν ἔτῃσιν ἀρχὸς Ἐμὼρ σὺν παιδὶ Συχέμ, μάλ' ἀτειρέε φῶτε.» 9.22.3 εἶτα περὶ Ἰακὼβ καὶ τὴν εἰς Μεσοποταμίαν αὐτοῦ παρουσίαν καὶ τὸν τῶν δύο γυναικῶν γάμον καὶ τὴν τῶν τέκνων γένεσιν καὶ τὴν παρουσίαν τὴν ἐκ Μεσοποταμίας ἐπὶ τὰ Σίκιμα. εἶπε δέ· «Ἰακὼβ Συρίην κτηνοτρόφον ἷκτο καὶ εὐρὺ ῥεῖθρον Ἐϋφρήταο λίπεν ποταμοῦ κελάδοντος. ἤλυθε γὰρ κἀκεῖθι λιπὼν δριμεῖαν ἐνιπὴν αὐτοκασιγνήτοιο· πρόφρων ὑπέδεκτο δόμονδε Λάβαν, ὅς οἱ ἔην μὲν ἀνεψιός, ἀλλὰ τότ' οἶος ἤνασσεν Συρίης, νειηγενὲς αἷμα λεγογχώς. τῷ δὲ γάμον κούρης μὲν ὑπέσχετο καὶ κατένευσεν ὁπλοτάτης· οὐ μὴν τελέθειν ἐπεμαίετο πάμπαν, ἀλλὰ δόλον τολύπευσε καὶ εἰς λέχος ἀνέρι πέμπε Λείαν, ἥ οἱ ἔην προγενεστέρη. οὐδέ μιν ἔμπης ἔλλαθεν, ἀλλ' ἐνόησε κακορραφίην καὶ ἔδεκτο παῖδ' ἑτέρην, ἀμφοῖν δ' ἐμίγη σὺν ὁμαίμοσιν ᾗσι. τῷ δ' υἱεῖς ἐγένοντο νόῳ πεπνυμένοι αἰνῶς ἕνδεκα καὶ κούρη ∆είνα περικαλλὲς ἔχουσα εἶδος, ἐπίστρεπτον δὲ δέμας καὶ ἀμύμονα θυμόν.» 9.22.4 ἀπὸ δὲ τοῦ Εὐφράτου φησὶ τὸν Ἰακὼβ ἐλθεῖν εἰς τὰ Σίκιμα πρὸς Ἐμμώρ· τὸν δὲ ὑποδέξασθαι αὐτὸν καὶ μέρος τι τῆς χώρας δοῦναι. καὶ αὐτὸν μὲν τὸν Ἰακὼβ γεωμορεῖν, τοὺς δὲ υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ ἕνδεκα τὸν ἀριθμὸν ὄντας ποιμαίνειν, τὴν δὲ θυγατέρα ∆είναν καὶ τὰς γυναῖκας ἐριουργεῖν. καὶ τὴν ∆είναν παρθένον οὖσαν εἰς τὰ Σίκιμα ἐλθεῖν πανηγύρεως οὔσης βουλομένην θεάσασθαι τὴν πόλιν· Συχὲμ δὲ τὸν τοῦ Ἐμμὼρ υἱὸν ἰδόντα ἐρασθῆναι αὐτῆς καὶ ἁρπάσαντα ὡς 9.22.5 ἑαυτὸν διακομίσαι καὶ φθεῖραι αὐτήν. αὖθις δὲ σὺν τῷ πατρὶ ἐλθόντα πρὸς τὸν Ἰακὼβ αἰτεῖν αὐτὴν πρὸς γάμου κοινωνίαν· τὸν δὲ οὐ φάναι δώσειν, πρὶν ἂν ἢ πάντας τοὺς οἰκοῦντας τὰ Σίκιμα περιτεμνομένους Ἰουδαΐσαι· τὸν δὲ Ἐμμὼρ φάναι πείσειν αὐτούς. φησὶ δὲ περὶ τοῦ δεῖν περιτέμνεσθαι αὐτοὺς ὁ Ἰακώβ· 9.22.6 «Οὐ γὰρ δὴ θεμιτόν γε τόδ' Ἑβραίοισι τέτυκται, γαμβροὺς ἄλλοθεν εἴς γε νυούς τ' ἀγέμεν ποτὶ δῶμα, ἀλλ' ὅστις γενεῆς ἐξεύχεται εἶναι ὁμοίης.» 9.22.7 εἶτα ὑποβὰς περὶ τῆς περιτομῆς· «Ὅς ποτ', ἐπεὶ πάτρης ἐξήγαγε δῖον Ἀβραάμ, αὐτὸς ἀπ' οὐρανόθεν κάλεσ' ἀνέρα παντὶ σὺν οἴκῳ σάρκ' ἀποσυλῆσαι πόσθης ἄπο, καί ῥ' ἐτέλεσσεν· ἀστεμφὲς δὲ τέτυκται, ἐπεὶ θεὸς αὐτὸς ἔειπε.» 9.22.8 πορευθέντος οὖν εἰς τὴν πόλιν τοῦ Ἐμμὼρ καὶ τοὺς ὑποτασσομένους παρακαλοῦντος περιτέμνεσθαι, ἕνα τῶν Ἰακὼβ υἱῶν τὸ ὄνομα Συμεῶνα διαγνῶναι τόν τε Ἐμμὼρ καὶ τὸν Συχὲμ ἀνελεῖν, τὴν ὕβριν τῆς ἀδελφῆς μὴ βουληθέντα πολιτικῶς ἐνεγκεῖν· ταῦτα δὲ διαγνόντα Λευὶν τῷ ἀδελφῷ κοινώσασθαι· λαβόντα δ' αὐτὸν συγκάταινον ἐπὶ τὴν πρᾶξιν παρορμῆσαι, λόγιον προφερόμενον 9.22.9 τὸν θεὸν ἀνελεῖν φάμενον τοῖς Ἁβραὰμ ἀπογόνοις δέκα ἔθνη δώσειν. φησὶ δὲ οὕτως ὁ Συμεὼν πρὸς τὸν Λευίν· «Εὖ γὰρ ἐγὼ μῦθόν γε πεπυσμένος εἰμὶ θεοῖο· δώσειν γάρ ποτ' ἔφησε δέκ' ἔθνεα παισὶν Ἁβραάμ.» τὸν δὲ θεὸν αὐτοῖς τοῦτον τὸν νοῦν ἐμβαλεῖν διὰ τὸ τοὺς ἐν Σικίμοις ἀσεβεῖς εἶναι. φησὶ δέ· «Βλάπτε θεὸς Σικίμων οἰκήτορας, οὐ γὰρ ἔτιον εἰς αὐτοὺς ὅστις κε μόλῃ κακὸς οὐδὲ μὲν ἐσθλός· οὐδὲ δίκας ἐδίκαζον ἀνὰ πτόλιν οὐδὲ θέμιστας· λοίγια δ' ὠρώρει τοῖσιν μεμελημένα ἔργα.» 9.22.10 τὸν οὖν Λευὶν καὶ τὸν Συμεῶνα εἰς τὴν πόλιν καθωπλισμένους ἐλθεῖν καὶ πρῶτα μὲν τοὺς ἐντυγχάνοντας ἀναιρεῖν, ἔπειτα δὲ καὶ τὸν Ἐμμὼρ καὶ τὸν Συχὲμ 9.22.11 φονεῦσαι. λέγει δὲ περὶ τῆς ἀναιρέσεως αὐτῶν οὕτως· «Ὣς τότε δὴ Συμεὼν μὲν Ἐμὼρ ὤρουσεν ἐπ' αὐτὸν πλῆξέ τέ οἱ κεφαλήν, δειρὴν δ' ἕλεν ἐν χερὶ λαιῇ, λεῖψε δ' ἔτι σπαίρουσαν, ἐπεὶ πόνος ἄλλος ὀρώρει. τόφρα δὲ καὶ Λευὶν μένος ἄσχετος ἔλλαβε χαίτης γούνων ἁπτόμενον Συχὲμ ἄσπετα μαργήναντα. ἤλασε δὲ κληῗδα μέσην, δῦ δὲ ξίφος ὀξὺ σπλάγχνα διὰ στέρνων, λίπε δὲ ψυχὴ δέμας εὐθύς.» πυθομένους δὲ καὶ τοὺς ἑτέρους ἀδελφοὺς τὴν πρᾶξιν αὐτῶν ἐπιβοηθῆσαι καὶ τὴν πόλιν ἐκπορθῆσαι καὶ τὴν ἀδελφὴν ἀναρρυσαμένους μετὰ τῶν αἰχμαλώτων εἰς τὴν πατρῴαν
