seeing all things filled with abomination, and food and drink polluted by the accursed sacrifices. These things we have lamented at home, and in your presence we bewail them; for this is the only thing in your reign that we resent." On hearing these words, he who was called the gentlest and most philosophic by those like him, stripped off the mask of moderation and laid bare the face of his impiety. And 194 having ordered bitter and harsh tortures to be inflicted on them, he deprived them of the present life, or rather, freed them from that miserable time and procured for them the crowns of victory. But he attached a cause to their punishment, not the piety for which they were slain, but drunken insolence; for he said he punished them for insulting the emperor. He ordered this to be rumored about, begrudging the athletes of the truth the name and honor of martyrs. One of these was named Joventinus, and the other Maximinus. The city of Antioch, honoring them as champions of piety, has committed them to a costly tomb, and to this day they are honored with an annual public festival. And others of the highest rank and dignity, using similar boldness, enjoyed the same crowns. For that Valentinian who reigned a little later (he was at that time a chiliarch, leading the spearmen stationed around the palace) did not hide the zeal which he had for piety. For that thunderstruck man entered the precinct of Tyche dancing, and on either side of the doors stood temple-wardens with aspergillums, pre-purifying those who entered, as they supposed. But when Valentinian, who on this account obtained both empires, saw as he was preceding the emperor a drop approach his cloak, he struck the temple-warden with his fist, saying that he had been polluted, not purified. 195 Seeing what had happened, the most accursed one sent him away to a fortress situated beside the desert, having commanded him to live there. But he, after a year and a few months had passed, received the empire as a reward for his confession. For not only in that life does the just Judge honor those who care for divine things, but sometimes He also offers immediate rewards for their good labors, confirming the hoped-for gifts by those granted at the present time. But the tyrant also devised another scheme against piety. For while distributing gold to the military rolls according to the ancient custom, he himself sat on the imperial throne, and contrary to custom he set up an altar full of coals, and placed incense on a table beside it. And he commanded each of those who were to receive the gold first to cast the incense upon the altar, and then to receive the gold from his own right hand. This trap most men were completely unaware of; but those who had learned of it beforehand, feigning illness, escaped that harsh snare; others, desiring the money, neglected their own salvation; and others through cowardice betrayed their piety. However, after that ruinous distribution of money, some of those who had received the gold were feasting together at a certain mess. One of them, having received a cup, would not drink before making the saving sign. But when one of his messmates rebuked him and said that this was contrary to what had happened a short while ago, he asked what action of his he called contrary. And he reminded him of the altar and the incense and the denial that had taken place; 196 for these things are opposed to the Christian confession. On hearing this, most of those feasting cried out and lamented, and tearing out much of the hair of their heads, they rose from the banquet and, running through the marketplace, shouted that they were Christians and had been deluded by the emperor's tricks, and that they were singing a recantation and wrestling again to reverse the defeat that had occurred through ignorance. Running with these shouts they reached the palace, denouncing the tyrant's sophistries and begging to be handed over to the fire, so that by fire
