for you came to the aid of 4.16.14 those who resisted. The tyrant was astonished at these things, the earth became fearful and trembling. For he who is from the beginning rebuked the nations, and this is the change of his right hand. From the end of heaven is its going forth, and its goal to the ends of the earth, and we beheld its glory 4.16.15, full of grace and power. Let the neighboring rivers prophetically clap their hands; now let the Euphrates, true to its name, rejoice at the mighty deeds of the creator; let the Tigris change its beastliness to philanthropy; for the drunken frenzy 4.16.16 of its murders has been abolished. Let us sing a song of salvation to the Lord, let us sing to him with the martyrs a hymn of victory. Let us proclaim his glory by the rivers of Babylon, leaping in spirit; for we were not condemned to a Jewish lament or reproached with the shame of captivity by those who took us as spoil 4.16.17. Let us set forth the Lord as the leader of our joy, so that we may not forget the heavenly Jerusalem and our tongue cleave to our throat for wickedly failing to proclaim the wonders of God. Now the daughter of Babylon is, according to what is written, truly wretched, she who takes up the arrogant scepters, and the piety of the king is blessed, not bringing upon her an equal destruction or inflicting in return 4.16.18 the recompense which she paid out to us. For this second covenant is fulfilled, introducing to the spiritual Israel not to weigh out requital for evil, and a king is not rejected today for pitying an enemy, nor does Samuel, being zealous, contend over this 4.16.1 with the almighty Lord. For Jesus Christ, the ancient of days and elder, knows mercy to be more pious than sacrifice, and bequeaths the paternal kingdom to the merciful, and having philanthropy as his motive also takes the form of a servant, and associates with men, and knows the manger, and accepts swaddling clothes, and flees the tyrannical sword, and converses with 4.16. Egypt, then dwells in Nazareth, and is proclaimed a Galilean, and progresses in wisdom, and is slandered out of envy, and is tempted by Sadducees, and lodges with sinners, and is given over to suffering, and accepts a cross, and is counted among the lawless, and embraces a tomb, and passes over to resurrection, and having suffered all things, was well pleased, enjoying one thing only from us, by which we are also saved. 4.16.21 Let us sing to the Lord, not a song of exodus; for the festival is one of arrival, and city and temple are consecrated, and the ancestral law is renewed, and unadulterated faith is strengthened, and I see Christ the consecrator in the midst of the church, carrying the symbols of trophies on his shoulders. And the triumph is the cross, through which the barbarian is driven out, and the 4.16.22 Roman is brought in. Let us sing to the Lord also a hymn of exodus; for the Babylonian tribe is driven out of the city like a boar from the thicket, the one attempting to trample the holy things with its feet and in its madness to crush the pearls of faith with its claws 4.16.23. Let us imitate those who gave glory in Babylonia and become followers of their choir; for even now the fire of the Chaldeans is powerless to burn down the city of the martyrs. Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let the plains be joyful; for the 4.16.24 war-loving nations have been cast down. They perceived prophetically that they are constituted men, and now they are not ignorant of the nature of their own constitution, and what it was not possible for them to learn when they were prospering, 4.16.25 it is possible to see that they have been taught, having become wretched. Having composed these things for you out of joy, we have added for you an unprepared hymn, a table of angels, a simple and unadorned banquet; for the divine loves to be honored even by unstructured things and to accept the not-magnificent things of the escort, examining the progress of thanks4.16.26giving in the renewal of the heart, not in the bulk of a gift. the father
