the benefit of repentance, but always turning about in the mire of lawlessness, happens to be like a slave who knows the anger of his master, but works evil in his sight and triples the sin. Become sensible of the disease that surrounds you. Crush yourself as much as you can, seek also the mourning of like-minded brethren to help you toward freedom, show me your bitter and abundant tear, so that I may mix mine also, take also the priest as a sharer of your affliction, as a father. 13.12.2 For who is so falsely named a father or so unyielding in soul, as not to mourn with his children when they are grieved or again rejoice with them when they are glad? A priest so laments the sin of a spiritual son, as Jacob did the blood-stained tunic of Joseph, as David did the destruction of Absalom, as Eli did for Hophni and Phinehas who fell in battle, as Moses did for the people who innovated the godless calf-making. 13.12.3 Before your physical fathers, take courage in the one who begot you according to God, show him without blushing the hidden things, lay bare the secrets of your soul as one showing a hidden ailment to a physician; he himself will take care of both the seemliness and the healing; for shame touches the parents more than those who have suffered themselves. For their glory belongs to those who begot them, and their shame likewise. The appointed time of life is uncertain, brethren. Let us anticipate our departure with diligence. 13.12.4 For it is absurd for those who prudently take forethought for the flesh to cleanse themselves of humors before the rising of the so-called dog-star, so that the moisture, putrefied by the excessive heat, might not produce a disease-causing decay, but for those needing care of the mind not to anticipate the uncertainty of death and the heat of the punishing fire, which burns without ceasing and is never cooled. 13.12.5 You had the evangelical drachma and were beautifully rich with the coin, then through carelessness you lost it. Light the lamp of repentance, stoop down carefully, seek the treasure hidden in earthly passions. Having found it, pick it up and save it, so that we, your neighbors, may rejoice with you with the joy that is in Christ, to whom is due glory, now and always, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
14.t.1 A discourse of Asterius, bishop of Amasea, on the beginning of the holy fasts
14.1.1 Man is a composite creature, having received what he is from a visible body and a rational and incorporeal soul. Of these two aforesaid things, their nature and worth are not of equal honor, but the one was created as an instrument moved for the economy of the ruling part, while the other was appointed to lead and to rule, as being better than the inferior. 14.1.2 And this, having received the faculty of discernment from the mind and from reason and finding the difference between good things and those that are not such, knows God as maker and creator both of these things at hand and perceptible to the senses, but also of the invisible things, as many as an incorporeal mind, imagining, sees. 14.1.3 And practicing justice and virtue, as being dear to God, it longs for philosophy, and obeying its laws and precepts it leads itself as far as possible from carnal desires, and it draws near to God and with all its power endeavors to be made akin to the good. 14.1.4 And the greatest and most important part of this sacred philosophy turns upon what is called self-control, for from this the mind, remaining untroubled and having no intercourse with things from the belly or other things

14.1.1 Σύνθετον ζῷον ὁ ἄνθρωπος, ἀπὸ σώματος τοῦ φαινομένου καὶ τῆς λογικῆς καὶ ἀσωμάτου ψυχῆς λαχὼν εἶναι ὅπερ ἐστίν. Τῶν δέ γε δύο τούτων τῶν προρρηθέντων οὐχ ὁμότιμος ἡ φύσις καὶ ἡ ἀξία, ἀλλὰ τὸ μὲν ὄργανον ἐδημιουργήθη πρὸς τὴν οἰκονομίαν τῆς κρατούσης κινούμενον, ἡ δὲ ἡγεμονεύειν ἐτάχθη καὶ βασιλεύειν ὡς κρείττων τοῦ χείρονος. 14.1.2 Λαβοῦσα δὲ αὕτη τὸ διακριτικὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ νοῦ καὶ τοῦ λόγου καὶ τῶν καλῶν καὶ τῶν οὐ τοιούτων τὴν διαφορὰν ἐξευροῦσα γνωρίζει μὲν Θεὸν ποιητὴν καὶ δημιουργὸν τῶν τε ἐν ποσὶ τούτων καὶ τῇ αἰσθήσει καταληπτῶν, οὐ μὴν ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν ἀοράτων, ὅσα νοῦς ἀσώματος φαντασιούμενος βλέπει. 14.1.3 Ἀσκοῦσα δὲ δικαιοσύνην καὶ ἀρετήν, ὡς Θεῷ φίλη, ἐφίεται φιλοσοφίας καὶ τοῖς ἐκείνης νόμοις καὶ παραγγέλμασι πειθομένη ἀπάγει μὲν ἑαυτὴν ὅτι πλεῖστον τῶν σαρκικῶν ἐπιθυμημάτων, ἐγγίζει δὲ τῷ Θεῷ καὶ ὅση δύναμις οἰκειοῦσθαι τῷ ἀγαθῷ πραγματεύεται. 14.1.4 Αὐτῆς δὲ τῆς ἱερᾶς φιλοσοφίας περὶ τὴν λεγομένην ἐγκράτειαν τὸ πλεῖστον καὶ κυριώτερον στρέφεται, ἐντεῦθεν γὰρ ὁ νοῦς ἀθόλωτος μένων καὶ οὐδεμίαν ἐπιμιξίαν τῶν ἀπὸ γαστρὸς ἢ τῶν ἄλλων
