In the queen of cities, the magistros Theophanes was left behind by Constantine as steward of public affairs, who, being attached to Artabasdos and having received a letter from him, publicly announced that Constantine was dead and that Artabasdos had been chosen emperor by the armies. And so the people of the city, having gathered in the great church, subjected Constantine to anathema and acclaimed Artabasdos, with Patriarch Anastasius also consenting to these things. And Artabasdos, having been received and proclaimed emperor by all, immediately restored the venerable icons everywhere. But Patriarch Anastasius swore an oath that Copronymus had told him that "Christ is not the son of God, but a mere man born of Mary, just as I was born of my mother Mary." So when Artabasdos went out of the great city, 267 battles occurred again. And Constantine, having crossed over from Chalcedon, besieged the city, having set up a palisade around the land walls. But Artabasdos, having attacked this and been defeated, shut himself up inside the city and took care that it was securely guarded. And as Copronymus controlled the sea and did not allow the cargo ships to put in at the city, a famine oppressed those in it, so that many perished from it. But Artabasdos, having escaped, shut himself up in a certain fortress of the Opsikion theme and, having been seized, was blinded in the eyes along with his two sons. Many of those who had allied with Artabasdos were put to death by Copronymus, and before the others, Baktangios the patrician, a man of distinction, whose wife the tyrant forced after many years to go to Chora, where he had been buried, and to dig up her husband's 268 bones and to carry them away herself and throw them into the Pelagion, where the condemned were cast. And when the horse races were being held, having led Artabasdos and his children through the middle of the theater, he celebrated a triumph. But indeed he also commanded Patriarch Anastasius to be brought in from the Diippion seated backwards on a donkey, so that he was looking toward its tail, and thus he dishonorably triumphed over him too, after he had first been publicly flogged, so that the prophecy of the renowned patriarch Germanus came to pass. For once, when Anastasius was walking behind the aforementioned patriarch and stepped on his omophorion, the holy Germanus turned and said, "Do not hurry; the Diippion awaits you." whom, even after the dishonorable parade, as one like-minded with him, he allowed to hold the church again and to perform sacred rites. Τῶν Ἀράβων δὲ διαφερομένων ἀλλήλοις καὶ μάχαις ἐμφυλίοις ἀσχολουμένων, ἀδείας λαβόμενος ὁ Κοπρώνυμος ἐκστρατεύει κατὰ Συρίας καὶ λαμβάνει τὴν Γερμανίκειαν. σεισμοῦ δὲ γενομένου κατὰ Παλαιστίνην καὶ Συρίαν μεγίστου, πολλαὶ καὶ ἐκκλησίαι καὶ μοναστῶν κατέπεσον καταγώγια καὶ οἰκίαι καὶ μυριάδες ἀνθρώπων ἀπώλοντο. ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐκ νόσων φθορὰ 269 πολλὴ τῶν ἀνθρώπων συμβέβηκε κατά τε Σικελίαν καὶ Καλαβρίαν καὶ καθ' Ἑλλάδα καὶ χώρας ἑτέρας, ἣ καὶ ἕως αὐτοῦ τοῦ Βυζαντίου κατήντησε· καὶ τοσοῦτον ἦν τὸ τῶν θνησκόντων πλῆθος ὡς μὴ οἷόν τε εἶναι τοὺς θνήσκοντας ἐκκομίζεσθαι· διὸ ἁμάξαις αὐτοὺς κατὰ πλείονας ἐπιτιθέντες ἐξέφερον. τῷ μέντοι Κοπρωνύμῳ ἡ τοῦ Χαγάνου θυγάτηρ ἔτεκε παῖδα, ὃν ὠνόμασε Λέοντα καὶ ἀνηγόρευσε βασιλέα, στεφθέντα διὰ Ἀναστασίου τοῦ ὁμοδοξοῦντος αὐτῷ πατριάρχου. Ἐκράτησε δὲ ὁ Κωνσταντῖνος τῆς Θεοδοσιουπόλεως καὶ τῆς Μελιτηνῆς, ὅθεν ὑπερφρονήσας σφοδρότερον κατὰ τῆς ἐκκλησίας καὶ τῆς ὀρθοδόξου πίστεως ἔπνευσε, δόγματα ἐκτιθέμενος, δι' ὧν τὸν
