the same learning. I made, he says, a beautiful body; I give to you the creation of the better part; you make a beautiful soul. I said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and every fruit tree; you also say, Let this earth bring forth its own fruit, and whatever you wish to effect will come forth. I make summer and mist, I establish thunder, and create spirit, I formed a dra 62.586 gon to play with it, that is, the devil. Nor did I begrudge you this authority; play with it you also, if you wish; for you are able to bind him like a sparrow. I make the sun rise on the evil and on the good; imitate me you also, share what is yours with both the good and the evil. Being insulted, I endure and do good to those who insult me; imitate me you also; for you are able. I do good, not for a return; imitate me you also, and do not do good for a return, nor for a reward. I kindled luminaries in the heaven; you also kindle brighter ones than these, for you are able; enlighten those in error; that good deed of acknowledging me is greater than seeing the sun. You are not able to make a man, but you are able to make a man just and well-pleasing to God. I worked the substance; you beautify the choice. See how I love you, and in the greater things I have given you the strength. See, beloved, how we have been honored; and some of the unreasoning and ungrateful say, Why are we masters of our choice? All these things that we have gone through, in which we are able to imitate God, if there were no choice, it would not have been possible for us to imitate. I rule, he says, over angels, and you through the first-fruits. I sit upon a royal throne; and you sit with me through the first-fruits; He raised us up, he says, and made us sit together at the right hand of the Father. The Cherubim and the Seraphim worship you, every angelic power, principalities, authorities, thrones, dominions, through the first-fruits. Do not accuse the body, which enjoys such honor, which even the bodiless powers tremble at. But what shall I say? I show my love not by these things alone, but also by what I suffered. For your sake I was spat upon, I was struck, I emptied myself of glory, I left the Father, and I came to you who hate me and turn away, and do not even wish to hear my name; I pursued and ran after you, that I might seize you; I united you and joined you to myself; Eat me, I said, drink me. And I have you above, and I am intertwined with you below. Is it not enough for you, that I have your first-fruits above? does this not console your longing? and I came down below again, I am not simply mixed with you, but I am intertwined, I am eaten, I am ground small, so that the commingling and the mixing and the union might be great. For things that are united stand in their own boundaries; but I am woven together with you. I do not wish there to be any middle ground hereafter; I wish both to be one. Knowing these things, therefore, and his great care for us, let us do all things, which are able to show us not unworthy of his great gifts; may it be that we all attain them, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
HOMILY 10. I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the
elect angels, that you keep these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality. Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins. Keep yourself pure. No longer drink wa 62.586 ter, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities.
