to the Father and God, and not of a different substance, nor foreign to His own unique divinity. But if not, neither is He to be worshipped. For "You shall not worship a foreign god," it is written; nor do we command to accept some recent god. Therefore do not say an addition of worship, nor that the Son was passed over in silence by the ancients, but has been revealed to us, if indeed you confess the Son to be the creative Word. For the fathers knew the Word, they worshipped the Word of God, and with the Word, the Spirit. Do not separate Him from the one who says, "I alone am God, and there is none besides me;" so that you may not be forced to blaspheme the Son as not being God; nor separate Him from the one who says: "I alone stretched out the heaven," so that you may not also cease from calling the Son creator; because the one who stretched out the heaven is not separated from the glory of the only God. Therefore in the Son know the Father, in the Father glorify the Son. Do not divide the indivisible, do not cleave the uncleavable. For even if you wish, it is not cleaved. Even if the heretics are rent asunder, the Trinity is not rent asunder; but it is what it is, even if it does not seem so to others. For the holy Trinity is a cord, and is venerable in one and eternal glory, carrying everywhere the same and one single divinity, 29.761 unbreakable, uncleavable, indivisible, filling all things, encompassing all things, being in all things, creating, governing, sanctifying and life-giving. This divine and most wonderful intertwining is not rent asunder, according to what is written, that "The threefold cord will not be rent asunder." With this thought the blessed Paul also, writing somewhere to those who believe rightly, said: "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all." For when all things are worked by God through Jesus Christ in the Spirit, I see the inseparable operation of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. And because of this all the saints are temples of God and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, in whom dwells the one divinity, and one lordship, and one holiness of Father and of Son and of Holy Spirit, through the one sanctification of baptism. Against those who say, that it is often written concerning the Son and the Father, but concerning the Spirit only in baptism. But if the Father says, "In the last days I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh," what shall we say about the Son? For He is not written of here. But if the prophet says: "There stags met, and they saw one another's faces; they passed by in number, and not one of them was left behind, because the Lord commanded them, and His Spirit gathered them;" where is the Son? But if he says: "A spirit shall go forth from me, and I have made every breath;" where is the Son? But if David says: "And take not your holy Spirit from me;" where is the Son? If the same says: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right Spirit within my inward parts;" where is the Son? But if the same says again: "And your good Spirit will lead me in a level land;" where is the Son? But if the same says: "And establish me with your guiding Spirit;" where is the Son? But if Job says: "The divine Spirit is what made me;" where is the Son? But if the same Job says: "There is a spirit in mortals, and it is the breath of the Almighty that teaches me;" where is the Son? But if David says: "You will send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created, and you will renew the face of the earth;" where is the Son? But if he says: "Where shall I go from your Spirit, and from your presence where shall I flee?" where is the Son? But if he says: "Woe, rebellious children, thus says the Lord; You made a plan, but not through me, and covenants, but not through my Spirit;" where is the Son? But if he says: "And a rod shall come forth from the root of Jesse, and a flower shall spring up from the 29.764 root, and there will rest upon him the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and piety, and the Spirit of the fear of God shall fill him;" how shall I separate the Spirit? But if he says: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me, he has sent me to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind;" how shall I separate the
