Domestic animals were frozen solid, shackled by the ice and chilled to death. Some of these ice-blocks, rolled over the waters by the force of the winds with a violent rush, as they dashed against the sea-walls of the city, they immediately cast down what was struck, and not only were the walls demolished, but very many houses were also shaken down with them. And a great drought also occurred at this time, so that even the ever-flowing rivers dried up and the springs completely failed. But his foolish soul was in no way improved by these things, but summoning his patriarch, he said to him in secret, "Tell me, if we call Mary Christ-bearer, what harm will come of this?" But he at once resorted to supplication, 274 saying, "Do not reveal this at another time or to another person, O emperor; for this is the idea of Nestorius. Or do you not know how he is denounced by every church of the faithful and has been condemned by anathema?" But he answered him, "I did not say this because I think so, but I asked because I wished to learn." But he was carried to such a pitch of fighting against God as to even hand over the relics of the saints to the fire and to command that 'holy' be said neither of the Theotokos nor indeed of any of those who have pleased God, but to say 'the apostle Peter and Paul' and 'the martyr George' or 'Theodore' and likewise for the rest. But when the assembly of the unholy bishops, about which I have already spoken, committed to writing the things impiously decreed by them, calling it a synodical tome, the most impious one demanded that all the bishops and those of the monks renowned for virtue subscribe to these things. For even if he instituted a most severe persecution against the monks, so that almost no one was left in the city or, at any rate, practicing monasticism in public, yet there were still many in hiding and others who practiced their asceticism outside the city. 275 Therefore, as many as succumbed for fear of his savagery and confirmed that godless document, were allowed to live and were left unharmed; but as many as did not obey were deprived of life by bitter tortures and violent deaths. At which time also Stephen, great among ascetics and renowned among champions, not having been persuaded to accept and confirm what he called a tome, after suffering many things, was finally cruelly killed and, being dragged from the prison of the praetorium as far as the region of Pelagius, was cast there with the condemned, where there was a shrine of the martyr Pelagius, which the hater of God demolished, and digging a very deep pit, he ordered the condemned to be thrown there. And he punished many of those in office and of the senatorial council on account of their reverence for the holy icons, and he demanded an oath from all that no one should pay reverence to the divine icons; he demanded this oath even from Constantine himself, whom he himself had appointed to preside over the church, and he, having ascended the ambo, swore it. And going out against the Bulgarians with a large fleet, he moored the ships at 276 Anchialus, and when a violent wind blew, almost all of them were shattered, and great multitudes of both the naval and military forces perished in the waters; whence he returned without success. Raging, however, against the monks, while horse races were being held in the hippodrome, he seized many of them and made a spectacle of them, parading them through the hippodrome, holding indecent women by the hand. And some of the distinguished magistrates, some out of envy for their beauty and strength, and others because they reported his unspeakable acts to the monks, he falsely accused of plotting against him, and he cut off the heads of two of the more distinguished ones; and for the rest, having put out their eyes, he confined them within prescribed boundaries, where every year he would send and torture each one with a hundred lashes from an ox-whip. But also the patriarch Constantine, who had been appointed by him, he alleged was conversing with one of these magistrates and speaking against him, and he prepared certain accusers for his conviction. And when he denied it, he made the accusers 277 swear an oath. When these things had happened, the patriarch was sent into exile. And the tyrant appointed another patriarch, a certain eunuch
