of the Jewish people are prophesied the things from the Jacob my child, I will uphold him; Israel my chosen, my soul has received him, it will be clear to those who wish to examine each word of the preceding texts, but also from the accuracy according to the Hebrew this is clear; for neither the name Jacob nor Israel appears in it, whence it has also been marked with an obelus in the accurate copies of the Seventy, since indeed no other of the righteous except our Savior Jesus Christ, nor indeed was the son of Isaac, Jacob who was also called Israel, such a one that the preceding texts 201 could be applied to him, I think no one doubts; for even if one were to apply to others the words, I have put my spirit upon him, what could one say to he will bring forth judgment to the nations, and to what follows, and especially to, and in his name the nations will hope? And how could it be plausible to apply to either the people of the Jews, or to Jacob son of Isaac himself, or to any other of the righteous, the words, I have given you for a covenant of a people, for a light to the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out the prisoners from their bonds, and from the prison house those who sit in darkness? But let these difficulties be raised by us against those of the circumcision; indeed the Gospel clearly teaches us that this prophecy has been fulfilled in our Savior Jesus, when the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him, how they might destroy him. But Jesus, knowing it, withdrew from there; and many followed him, and he healed them all; and he warned them not to make him known; for to these things it is added in the Gospel, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Behold, my servant whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased; I will put my Spirit upon him, and the rest, as much as has been recounted in the prophecy. He himself, then, would be the one also called Jacob, being the only-begotten Son of God; as it is said elsewhere, It is a great thing for you to be called my servant, to establish the tribes of Jacob and to restore the dispersion of Israel. He therefore, having heard from the Father, among other things, also this, I have given you for a covenant of a people, for a light to the nations, 202 brought forth judgment to the nations, so that they might conduct their lives with discerning reason according to the holy Gospel; and it is clear how in his name the nations that believed in him have hoped, and how he has been shown to be a light to the nations, so that through the light of his word the eyes of the mind of those long since blinded by these things might be opened; but he also led out from bonds those formerly held fast by the chains of their own sins, and from the prison house of the devil those sitting in darkness because of ignorance concerning the God of all. It is left for the lover of learning to examine each word of the prophecy, and to apply the underlying meanings to the Christ of God analogously to what we have said. Ps. 21. Be my witnesses, and I am a witness, says the Lord God, and the servant whom I have chosen. And who would be the servant whom the Lord God chose, whom he also counts with himself as a witness to those who witness for him, if not this one about whom it was also said in the preceding chapter, Jacob my servant; I will uphold him, and what follows? which things were clearly shown to have been prophesied beforehand concerning our Savior and Lord Jesus. Ps. 22. I made the earth, and man upon it; I with my hand established the heaven, I commanded all the stars. I have raised him up a king 203 with righteousness, and all his ways are straight; he will build my city, and will bring back the captivity of my people, not with gifts, nor with a ransom, said the Lord of Sabaoth. Thus says the Lord of Sabaoth, The labor of Egypt, and the merchandise of the Ethiopians, and the Sabeans, men of stature, will come over to you, and they will be your slaves; and they will follow after you in chains, and they will come over to you, and they will worship you, and they will pray in you, that God is in you, and there is no God besides you; for you are
