And Moses, having heard, touched the water with his staff, and so the stream parted, and the army proceeded by a dry path. 9.27.37 But when the Egyptians entered and pursued them, he says that fire flashed out before them, and the sea once again flooded the path; and that the Egyptians were all destroyed by both the fire and the flood; but the Jews, having escaped the danger, spent forty years in the wilderness, as God rained on them a grain like millet, similar to snow in color. He says that Moses was tall, reddish-haired, grey-haired, long-haired, and dignified. And he did these things when he was about eighty-nine years old.”

9.28.1 28. FROM EZEKIEL CONCERNING MOSES “Concerning Moses being exposed by his mother in the marsh and being taken up and raised by the king's daughter, Ezekiel the tragic poet also relates the story, taking up the history from the beginning, from those who came with Jacob into Egypt to Joseph. And he speaks thus, introducing Moses saying: 9.28.2 ‘From the time when Jacob, leaving the land of Canaan, came down to Egypt, having with him seventy souls, and he begot a great people, suffering evil and afflicted, being abused until these times by evil men and the hand of power. For seeing our race sufficiently increased, King Pharaoh devised great treachery against us, tormenting the people with brick-making and heavy buildings, and he built fortified cities for them, the wretched ones. Then he proclaimed to the Hebrew race to cast the male children into the deep-flowing river. There the mother who bore me hid me for three months, as she said. But not escaping notice, she put me out, having put adornment around me, beside the banks of the river into a thick, reedy marsh; And Mariam my sister kept watch nearby. And then the daughter of the king, together with her maidens, came down to the bathing-place to brighten her fresh skin; and seeing and taking me, she immediately picked me up, and she knew I was a Hebrew; and Mariam my sister, running up to the princess, says these things: ‘Do you want me to quickly find for you a nurse for this child from among the Hebrews?’ And she urged the girl on. And going, she told my mother, and she was quickly present, my mother herself, and she took me into her arms. And the king’s daughter said: ‘Woman, nurse this one, and I will pay you your wage.’ And she named him Moses, on account of having taken him up from the wet river bank.’ 9.28.3 After this, Ezekiel says other things about these matters in his tragedy, introducing Moses saying: ‘When the time of infancy had passed for me, my mother brought me to the palace of the princess, telling and recounting to me everything about my paternal lineage and the gifts of God. So while I was in the time of childhood, she provided everything with royal foods and education, as if from her own loins; but when the full measure of days had come, I went out from the royal houses, for my spirit and the king’s device urged me toward the works. I see first men in a struggle of hands, one a Hebrew, the other an Egyptian by race. And seeing that they were alone and no one was present, I rescued my brother, and I killed the other man, and I hid him in the sand, so that another might not see us and expose the murder. On the next day, seeing again two men, and indeed relatives, quarreling, I say: Why do you strike one weaker than yourself? But he said: Who sent you to us as a judge or an overseer here? You will not kill me, will you, like the man yesterday? And I, being afraid, said: How did this become known? And he quickly reported all these things to the king; and Pharaoh seeks to take my life; and I, having heard, depart out of the way and
