Father in that all things of the Son are seen in the Father. For the Son has all things of the Father, He is not the Father, and conversely all things of the Son are contemplated in the Father, He is not the Son. 1.1.595 If therefore in the Only-begotten are all things of the Father, and He is in the Father, and fatherhood is not cut off from unbegottenness, what can be conceived concerning the Father, separately in Himself for some interval, before the concept of the Son? 1.1.596 I, for my part, do not see. Therefore it is possible for us, taking courage, to fearlessly engage with what is put forward by them through this sophism, and, unterrified by the hobgoblin of the syllogism devised for frightening children, to say, that God is both holy and immortal and Father and unbegotten and eternal and all these things at once; and if you should grant hypothetically that any one of the things piously said of Him is not, all are abolished along with that one; for it is not possible, if He is not immortal, for the rest to be, and what has been said in part, 1.1.597 is to be understood universally. Therefore there is nothing about Him either prior or more recent, or else He will be found to be older and younger than Himself. For if God is not always all things, but according to some order and sequence one thing is, and another comes to be (and there is no composition in Him, but whatever He is, He is wholly), and according to the argument of the heresy, being first unbegotten, He afterwards becomes Father, no accumulation of acquired attributes being conceived in Him, He becomes nothing other than wholly older and younger than His whole self, preceding Himself in respect of His unbegottenness, but becoming secondary to Himself in respect of the concept of Father. 1.1.598 But if, as the prophet says of God, that He is the same, futile is the one who says that before begetting He was not unbegotten, because neither of these is found without the other, neither the name of Father nor that of unbegotten, but the two concepts arise together and with each other in the minds of those who reason piously. For God is Father from eternity and an eternal Father, and all that is piously said is named in the same way, this temporal sequence and order, as we said, being inoperative in the case of the pre-eternal nature. 1.1.599 But let us also see the rest of the dialectical cleverness, 1.1.599 which he himself says are 20at once ridiculous and pitiful20, saying this well. For truly broad is the laughter in what has been said, or rather, great is the lamentation over the deceit that possesses his soul. For since, according to one signification, "Father" has also included the concept of "unbegotten", as our argument holds, transferring the proper meaning of "Father" 1.1.600 to "unbegotten" alone, he says these things: 20For if it is the same thing to say "unbegotten" or "Father", it will be possible for us, leaving behind the word "Father", to use "unbegotten" and say: the unbegotten is the unbegotten of the Son; for just as the unbegotten is Father of the Son, so conversely the Father is the unbegotten of the Son20. It remains for me to marvel at the man for his resourcefulness, and to think that his versatile and varied trifling with doctrines is beyond the capacity of most people. 1.1.601 For what was said by our teacher was a single argument, briefly circumscribed, that it is possible for unbegottenness to be signified also through the appellation of "Father", but from this man there are so many, the multitude of which is not in the difference of the things conceived, but in the circuitous repetition and inversion of similar phrases. For just as those who run around the mill with their eyes covered, after much journeying remain in the same place, so he always revolves around the same things and does not depart from them. 1.1.602 He said once, jeeringly, that "Father" does not signify begetting, but being from nothing. Again he wove a similar argument: 20If "Father" signifies the unbegotten, before begetting He was not unbegotten20. Then a third time he returns to the same things: 20For it is possible20, he says, 20to use "unbegotten" and say: the unbegotten is the unbegotten of the Son20. And immediately he repeated what he has often vomited up, and says: 20for just as the unbegotten is Father of the Son, so conversely 1.1.603 the Father is the unbegotten of the Son20.
