In the eighteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar there was a very great eclipse of the sun, more than any known before; and it was night at the sixth hour of the day, so that even the stars appeared. 241 And the Lord Jesus Christ, the son of the living God, gave up the spirit on the same day of Preparation, it was about the ninth hour. And immediately there was a great earthquake throughout the whole world, and tombs were opened and rocks were split and the dead were raised, as is reported with all truth in the divine scriptures; so that the Jews said, Truly this was the son of God, whom we have crucified. And Jesus Christ was buried at the tenth hour of the same day of Preparation, in the consulship of Sulpicius and Sola, in the seventy-ninth year according to Antioch the great, when Cassius was then governor of Syria, who had also been promoted by the same Tiberius Caesar. And our lord and God Jesus arose in the month of Dystros, which is also March, on the 25th, at the tenth hour of the night, as the Lord's day was dawning, the twenty-sixth of the same month of March, when the moon was sixteen days old, and he appeared to the apostles and to many other saints and conversed with them on the earth for 40 days after the resurrection. And our lord and God Jesus Christ was taken up into the heavens in the month of Artemisios, which is also May, on the 4th, at the second hour of the day, on the fifth day, as the holy apostles and a great multitude of others were watching how he was taken up by the clouds, and the holy angels were saying, Why do you gaze into the heavens, men of Galilee? This is Jesus. 242 And the holy and life-giving Spirit came down upon his holy apostles in the month of Artemisios, which is also May, on the 14th, on the Lord's day, at the third hour of the day, when the same Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea; who was appointed to rule the nation by the same Tiberius Caesar, who abolished the kingdom of the Jews and appointed for them a ruler whom he himself wished, while Annas and Caiaphas were high priests of the Jewish nation. And four years after the resurrection and ascension of our savior Jesus Christ, during the reign of the same Tiberius Caesar, after Saint Paul had departed from Antioch the great, having first preached the word there in the street near the Pantheon called Singon with Barnabas, and had gone out to Cilicia, Peter came from Jerusalem to the same Antioch and was teaching the word. And having enthroned himself there, being persuaded by those from the Jews who had become Christians, he did not receive or love the faithful from the Gentiles, but having thus left them, he departed from there. But Saint Paul, coming after this to Antioch the great, and learning these things about Saint Peter, removed the offense everywhere and received and loved all equally, exhorting everyone, just as the most wise Clement and Tatian the chronographers wrote these things. 243 But the emperor Tiberius died a natural death in the palace, being 78 years old. And after the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Helius Gaius, also known as Caligula, became emperor, who had great fear towards all the barbarian nations before he became emperor; and for this reason the senate proclaimed him emperor. He began his reign in the consulship of Gallus and Nonnianus, and his reign lasted 4 years and seven months. He was tall, well-proportioned, with fine features, fair-complexioned, with the beginnings of a beard, straight-haired, small-eyed, very fierce, quick-tempered, magnanimous. In the first year of his reign Antioch the great suffered from a divine wrath in the month of Dystros, which is also March, on the 23rd around the second dawn, this its suffering after the Macedonians, in the year 85 according to the Antiochenes. And a part of Daphne also suffered; and the emperor Gaius provided much money to the same
