in the kingdom of Christ and God." These things he also wrote to the Philippians: "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are good, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things, which ye have both learned, and received, and seen in me." Likewise he also writes to the Colossians: "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience." And the Old Scripture has legislated in harmony with the New. For God himself says: "Be holy, as I also am holy." And: "Do not pay attention to a wicked woman; for the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, which for a season is sweet to your throat, but afterward you will find it bitterer than gall." And one can find myriad other things condemning this intemperance. But the all-defiled and ill-named called debauchery a mystical communion. 28. —On Repentance. But Holy Scripture not only forbids transgressions, but also heals those who have received their wounds. For it abhors the savagery of Novatus, and accuses those shepherds who have not taken this care of the sheep. And God himself says: "O shepherds, the weak you have not strengthened, and the sick you have not healed, and that which was unwell you did not make whole, and the wandering you did not bring back, and the lost you did not seek." He who accuses those who have not exercised this forethought, it is clear that He wishes the weak of the sheep to be deemed worthy of healing; for this reason He said to the same prophet: "I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel, and you shall hear a word from my mouth, and you shall warn him from me. When I say to the sinner, You shall surely die, and you do not warn the sinner 83.548 to warn the wicked man, to turn him from his wicked way that he may live, that lawless man shall die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at your hand." And after a little: "As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the sinner, but that he should turn from his wicked way, and live." Then exhortatively: "Turn ye, turn ye from your wicked way; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?" Then He commands the prophet to convey this word to them: "And you, son of man, say to the children of your people: The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day that he goes astray. and the iniquity of the lawless shall not kill him in the day that he turns from his iniquity, and does judgment and justice, and restores the pledge of a debtor, and pays back what he has robbed. If the lawless man has walked in the statutes of life, so as not to do injustice, he shall surely live, and shall not die, all his sins that he has committed shall not be remembered against him, because he has done judgment and justice, in them he shall live." And to Nebuchadnezzar the blessed Daniel offered the medicines of repentance. "And now, he says, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you: and redeem your iniquities with alms, and your injustices with mercy to the poor." And the prophecy of the divine Jeremiah is full of this teaching. For at one time he says: "Return, ye backsliding children, and I will return to you, saith the Lord God." And at another: "Wash your heart from wickedness, O Israel, that you may be saved, lest thoughts of your pains be found in you." And again: "Does not he who falls rise up, or he who turns away not return?" And one can find many other such admonitions from him. And the all-wise
