Let what is said be such [as this]. All the numbers within the decad being doubled [or t]ripl[ed e]xcept for seven both beget and [are begotten], f[or exam]ple, the one begets the two, and the two the fou[r], [thus begotten] by the one, and the four the eight, be[gotten] [itself also] by the two, and the five the ten, and the six, though some[time begotten], does not beget, but the seven is neither b[egotten] by the preceding ones n[or] begets any after itself up to the decad; but also the two begets the six and the three the nine, being tripled. And it has [another] prerogative: for if you multi[ply] the numbers from the monad up to seven in a double ratio, it becomes at once equal and a squ[are]; for one, two, four, eight, sixteen, thirty-two, being [dou]bled, the sixty-four, which [i]s a square, for eight times eight is sixty-four, and a cube, fo[r four] times four times four is sixty-four. But also being tripled up to seven again from the monad, it produces t[he] se[ven hundred twe]nty-n[ine], it too being at once a square [and] a cube; [for] one, [three], nine, twenty-seven, eighty-one, t[wo hundred f[or]ty-th]ree, seven hundred twenty-nine, as has been said, completes at once a c[ube and a squa]re, a square thus: [twenty-se]ven tim[es twenty-sev]en is seven hundred twenty-nine, a cube thus: n[ine] times n[ine] times [nine] is seven hundred twenty-nine; the squ[are] signifies stability, but the cube *** Therefore, what has been sai[d] about the numbers might not [unlikely] be [confi]rmed by the fact that noth[ing id]le is contained in the divine scriptures. And it is fitting to add to th[ose] things that have been said that a living spark was [prope]rly [le]ft behind in the ark, so that, another beginning co[mi]ng to be, a heresy as i[f about two c]reators might not be introduced. For if, even with so much safety ha[ving been m]ade, the heretics invent arguments, intro[ducing] different deities, how much more if they also found plausible arguments 185 for their own evil hypothesis. ῃιι, 4. For yet seven days I will bring rain upon the earth for fo[rt]y days and for[ty] nights; and I will blot out [every] li[ving] thing that I have made from the face of the earth. And [this] was foretold by the philanthropy of God for correc[tion ... ...] [for] hearing about the flood that would [be] after seven days, just as we also set forth in the preceding [books the preaching according to] Jonah, which itself also happened for the repentance [of the Ni]nevites, as indeed happened. For forty [day]s and forty nights a [downpo]ur from above and below happened so, that it surpassed the mountains by [fifte]en cu[bits]. And if the number according to which the fl[ood hap]pened also has a meaning, consider how "I will blot out ev[ery] li[ving thi]ng, that I have made upon the earth". Some, having understood that of the [resur]rection [...], thought that this world subsists a[nd com]es to be from a previous wo[rld] that was consumed by fire [accor]ding to the Stoics, the [sa]me things existing in the matter from t[his] world, [un]changed with respect to this one. And this they ext[emporize]d in [the] proof of their dogmas; for it is not possible for [the] movements of souls to happen [unchan]geably of the one that [has bee]n [and] of the one that is to come, so as to diff[er] in nothing. ῃιι, 5. A[nd] Noah [di]d all that [the Lord G]od commanded him. That [this] is a testimony for a man, to do all that the Lord [God] co[mmande]d, has also been said in the preceding books.
