a reminder. But they are unaware that they are celebrating Christian mysteries, since the construction of the tabernacle is a prophecy in action of this church, which our Word established. 14.16.3 For this reason they also adorn the tabernacle with leaves and beautify the vestibules with fruits as a type of the new, fruitful church being about to spring up from the law. And the feast of trumpets arouses the souls to the preparation for the resurrection, as Paul says: For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised. 14.16.4 And our God and Savior himself also teaches in the gospels, saying: And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 14.17.1 And hearing these words, perhaps they will use such a rebuttal against us: that remembering the ancient wonders of the benefactions of God, they offer these things as thanksgivings for Mount Sinai and the trumpet that sounded at the giving of the law. But the foolish do not know that even then the trumpet was employed typically at the giving of the law. 14.17.2 For since one who receives the law as a rule of life and an orderly way of living ought to fear the punishment for disobedience, for this reason God, when sending out the written commandments of our life to men, immediately added the sound of the trumpet, a symbol of the resurrection from the dead, so that the disciples of the commandments, foreseeing the judgment through the resurrection, might keep inviolable the doctrines of the divine legislation. 14.17.3 Therefore, both fasting and the feast of tabernacles and trumpets are mysteries of our piety, long ago prefigured, but receiving their fulfillment at the appointed time, when the theophanies in the flesh of our Savior were completed; to whom befits glory and honor and worship, now and always, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
