and their foolish heart was darkened; for professing to be wise, they became fools." But not so are all those who fear the Lord; but as many as endure with joy the chastisements of their own father and master, as grateful servants and as true sons, saying: "I will bear the chastening of the Lord, because I have sinned against him," and elsewhere: "The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the (187) glory which shall be revealed in us," and thus they persevere in daily, as we have said, chastisement and continual repentance, not flinching or being vexed by it, being instructed in the aforementioned way, they always remain splendidly adorned in the paternal house, becoming guests at table with their own father and beholding his glory and the wealth which they are to inherit. And when they have been well brought up and educated, and have arrived at the measure of the stature of a perfect man, then also the all-good father gives all his possessions into their hands.

But let us first say what is the measure of spiritual age and the height of the fullness of Christ and thus let us discuss the Father's possessions and how he gives these into the hands of those who believe in him. Therefore, attend wisely to the power of what will be said to you.

These are the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, spiritually considered: and so that I may make its beginning from below, its feet are faith and holy humility, a firm and unshakable foundation. Legs and ankles, shins and knees and thighs, are poverty, nakedness, exile, submission for Christ's sake with knowledge, obedience and willing servitude. The members and parts which must be covered are unceasing prayer in the mind, the sweetness which comes from the shedding of tears, the joy of the heart and its unspeakable consolation. Kidneys and loins are steadfastness and perseverance in prayers and synaxes, and the burning of the desiring faculty for the vision and communion with God which arises therefrom, as the divine David is recorded saying: "Purify my kidneys and my heart." And Paul says: (188) "Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth." And Peter, the chiefest of the apostles: "Wherefore, he says, girding up the loins of your mind, being sober to the end, hope for the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ, as children of obedience." By grace, he means the gift of the most holy Spirit, which makes us partakers and communicants of God.

The belly and stomach and the structure of the entrails are the receptive and intellectual workshop of the soul, in which you will understand the rational faculty as the heart in the middle, and in the rational faculty, both the desiring and the incensive faculties; which, in the manner of ribs, and muscles and nerves and fat, meekness, simplicity, forbearance, compassion, and reverence hold together and bind, they tend and cover, and they do not allow it to look upon visible things or to desire any of the things in them, nor do they permit it to bear grudges or to envy or to be jealous or to be angry or for these things ever to be seen by men. For since no passionate impulse of theirs at all goes outwards, they are kept concealed; and being within themselves and securely guarded by what we have mentioned, the rational faculty discerns and separates the worse from the better and shows the desiring faculty what things it must cleave to and what things it must love and what it must turn away from and hate; and the incensive faculty is present in the midst of these like a grateful servant, serving their counsels and cooperating with their wishes, rousing to courage and defense the resistance in these matters on the part of men who wish for good things or of evil men.

And since God who made these things is incomparably better than all visible things, it is fitting that the one honored with reason and undefiled, instead of all and before all, as

καί ἐσκοτίσθη ἡ ἀσύνετος αὐτῶν καρδία· φάσκοντες γάρ εἶναι σοφοί, ἐμωράνθησαν". Οὐχ οὕτως δέ πάντες οἱ φοβούμενοι τόν Κύριον· ἀλλ᾿ ὅσοι τάς τοῦ ἰδίου πατρός καί δεσπότου παιδείας ὡς εὐγνώμονες δοῦλοι καί ὡς υἱοί γνήσιοι μετά χαρᾶς ὑπενέγκωσι, λέγοντες· "Παιδείαν Κυρίου ὑποίσω, ὅτι ἥμαρτον αὐτῷ ", καί ἄλλως· "Οὐκ ἄξια τά παρόντα παθήματα πρός τήν (187) ἀποκαλυπτομένην ἡμῖν δόξαν εἰσί", καί οὕτως ἐμμείνωσι τῆ καθημερινῇ, ὡς ἔφημεν, παιδείᾳ καί διηνεκεῖ μετανοίᾳ, μή ἀποσκιρτῶντες ἤ πρός ταύτην ἀχθόμενοι, τῷ προειρημένῳ τρόπῳ παιδαγωγούμενοι, ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τῷ πατρικῷ ἐστολισμένοι λαμπρῶς ἀεί διαμένουσι, συνέστιοι τῷ ἑαυτῶν πατρί γινόμενοι καί τήν δόξαν καθορῶντες αὐτοῦ καί τόν πλοῦτον ὅν κληρονομεῖν μέλλουσιν. Ὅταν δέ καλῶς ἀνατραφῶσι καί παιδευθέντες εἰς μέτρον ἡλικίας τελείου ἀνδρός καταντήσωσι, τηνικαῦτα καί ὁ πανάγαθος πατήρ πάντα τά ὑπάρχοντα αὐτῷ δίδωσιν εἰς τάς χεῖρας αὐτῶν.

Ἀλλά γάρ εἴπωμεν πρότερον τί τό μέτρον τῆς πνευματικῆς ἡλικίας καί τό ὕψος τοῦ πληρώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ καί οὕτως περί τῶν ὑπαρχόντων τῷ Πατρί καί ὅπως δίδωσι ταῦτα εἰς τάς χεῖρας τῶν πιστευόντων αὐτῷ διέλθωμεν. Πρόσεχε οὖν τῇ δυνάμει τῶν ῥηθησομένων σοι συνετῶς.

Μέτρον ἡλικίας τοῦ πληρώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ταῦτά εἰσι πνευματικῶς θεωρούμενα· καί ἵνα κάτωθεν τήν ἀρχήν ταύτης ποιήσωμαι, πόδες αὐτῆς ἡ πίστις καί ἡ ἁγία ταπείνωσίς ἐστι, βάσις στερρά καί ἀκράδαντος. Σκέλη καί ἀστράγαλοι, κνῆμαι καί γόνατα καί μηροί, ἡ ἀκτημοσύνη, ἡ γυμνότης, ἡ ξενιτεία, ἡ διά Χριστόν ὑποταγή μετά γνώσεως, ἡ ὑπακοή καί ἡ εὐπρόθυμος δουλεία. Μέλη καί μόρια ἅ ἐγκαλύπτεσθαι χρεών, ἡ ἀδιάλειπτος εὐχή κατά νοῦν, ἡ ἐκ τῆς χύσεως τῶν δακρύων ἐγγινομένη ἡδύτης, ἡ χαρά τῆς καρδίας καί ἡ ἄφατος ταύτης παράκλησις. Νεφροί καί ὀσφύς, ἡ πρός τάς εὐχάς καί τάς συνάξεις στάσις καί καρτερία καί ἡ ἐκεῖθεν ἐγγινομένη πύρωσις τοῦ ἐπιθυμητικοῦ πρός θεωρίαν καί συνουσίαν Θεοῦ, καθώς ὁ θεῖος ∆υίδ ἀναγράφεται οὕτω λέγων· "Πύρωσον τούς νεφρούς μου καί τήν καρδίαν μου". Καί ὁ Παῦλός φησι· (188) "Στῆτε οὖν περιζωσάμενοι τάς ὀσφῦς ὑμῶν ἐν ἀληθείᾳ". Καί τῶν ἀποστόλων ὁ κορυφαιότατος Πέτρος "∆ιό, φησίν, ἀναζωσάμενοι τάς ὀσφῦς τῆς διανοίας ὑμῶν, νήφοντες τελείως, ἐλπίσατε ἐπί τήν φερομένην ὑμῖν χάριν ἐν ἀποκαλύψει Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὡς τέκνα ὑπακοῆς". Χάριν, τήν τοῦ παναγίου Πνεύματός φησι δωρεάν, ἥτις συμμετόχους ἡμᾶς καί συγκοινωνούς Θεοῦ ἀπεργάζεται.

Κοιλία καί στόμαχος καί ἡ τῶν ἐνδοσθίων κατασκευή τό χωρητικόν ὑπάρχει καί νοερόν τῆς ψυχῆς ἐργαστήριον, ἐν ᾧ τό λογιστικόν ὡς καρδίαν μέσον νοήσεις, καί ἐν τῷ λογιστικῷ, τό ἐπιθυμητικόν τε καί θυμικόν· ἅ καί δίκην πλευρῶν, ψυῶν τε καί νεύρων καί πιμελῆς, ἡ πρᾳότης, ἡ ἁπλότης, ἡ ἀνεξικακία, ἡ συμπάθεια καί ἡ εὐλάβεια συνέχουσι καί συνδοῦσι, περιέπουσί τε καί συγκαλύπτουσι καί πρός τά ὁρώμενα οὐκ ἐῶσιν ἀποβλέπειν ἤ τινος ἐπιθυμεῖν τῶν ἐν αὐτοῖς, ἀλλ᾿ οὐδέ μνησικακεῖν συγχωροῦσιν ἤ φθονεῖν ἤ ζηλοῦν ἤ ὀργίζεσθαι ἤ ὁρᾶσθαι ταῦτά ποτε ὑπό τῶν ἀνθρώπων. Ὁρμῆς γάρ αὐτῶν ἐμπαθοῦς ὅλως πρός τά ἔξω μή γινομένης, κεκαλυμμένα διατηροῦνται· ἔνδοθεν δέ αὐτά καθ᾿ ἑαυτά ὄντα καί ἀσφαλῶς ὑφ᾿ ὧν εἰρήκαμεν φυλαττόμενα, τό μέν λογιστικόν διακρίνει καί διαιρεῖ τό χεῖρον ἀπό τοῦ κρείττονος καί δεικνύει τῶ ἐπιθυμητικῷ οἷς δεῖ σχετικῶς προσκεῖσθαι καί ἅ δεῖ ἀγαπᾶν καί ἅ χρεών ἀποστρέφεσθαι καί μισεῖν· τό δέ θυμικόν μέσον τούτων ὥσπερ τις ὑπηρέτης εὐγνώμων πάρεστι, τοῖς ἐκείνων ἐξυπηρετῶν βουλήμασι καί θελήμασι συνεργῶν, διεγείρων πρός ἀνδρείαν καί ἄμυναν τῶν βουλομένων ἀγαθῶν ἀνδρῶν ἤ πονηρῶν τήν ἐφ᾿ ἑκατέρᾳ τούτων ἐπί τοῖς πράγμασιν ἔνστασιν.

Ἐπεί δέ κρείσσων ἀσυγκρίτως τῶν ὁρωμένων ἁπάντων ὁ ταῦτα κατασκευάσας Θεός, ἀντί πάντων καί πρό πάντων εἰκότως ὁ λόγῳ τετιμημένος καί ἀθόλωτος, ὡς
