we learn that at the end of the Roman kingdom ten kings will rise up at the same time, working many evils against one another, and contending for one another's kingdoms, in the same way the Macedonians continued to do; and 81.1505 that when these things are happening, the man of sin will appear, the son of perdition, that is, the Antichrist. Since, therefore, the end of the Roman kingdom resembles the division of the Macedonian kingdom, the blessed Daniel is taught at the same time the things that will happen under these and under those. For some of the things that will be said apply to the Macedonians, and some to the ten horns that will be, and to the one that sprouted up among them. And that these things are so, we shall learn from the prophecy itself. It is fitting, therefore, for us to pay attention with all accuracy, and to appropriately divide the things that apply to these and the things that apply to those. And we have an example of this in the evangelical teaching. For when the Lord had said to the apostles concerning the temple in Jerusalem, "Amen, amen I say to you, there will not be left here a stone upon a stone, which will not be thrown down," then when they asked, "When will these things be, and what is the sign of your coming?" and they having brought forward a twofold question, the Lord makes his answer mixed, saying at the same time the things that will happen to Jerusalem, and the things that will happen at the time of the consummation. But those initiated into divine things distinguish clearly the things fitting for these times and for those times. Therefore we also will do this here with the appropriate demonstration. Having taught, therefore, the blessed Daniel the one speaking with him, that the kingdom will be divided four ways, and having left aside two, I mean the one of Macedonia, and the one of Asia, or of the Hellespont, as having lasted for a short time, and having least troubled the Jews, he adds: 5. "And the king of the South grew strong, and one of his princes shall prevail against him, and shall rule a great dominion besides his own authority." And he means Ptolemy Philopator, not being content with the kingdom of Egypt, but also having taken Phoenicia, and Samaria, and Judea. And he says that one of his princes who grew strong was Scopas, whom Josephus the Hebrew writer also mentions, who, having been an excellent general, subjected to Ptolemy many of the things outside Ptolemy's kingdom. Alluding to this he says, "And he shall rule a great dominion besides his own authority," that is, he will rule many nations being outside the authority assigned to him. 6. "And after his years they shall be joined together, and the daughter of the king of the South shall come to the king of the North, to make agreements with him." After the death of Ptolemy Philopator, his son Ptolemy, surnamed Epiphanes, reigned. This, then, is what he says, that "After his years they shall be joined together;" and teaching how they shall be joined together: "The daughter, he says, of the king of the South shall come to the king 81.1508 of the North, to make agreements with him." And by the king of the North he means Antiochus, not Epiphanes, but the one called the Great, the father of Antiochus Epiphanes; for he was a contemporary of those Ptolemies. "But she shall not retain the strength of her arm, neither shall his seed stand; and she shall be given up, and they that bring her, and the young woman, and he that strengthened her in those times." But the marriage, he says, will take place, yet the union will not last for long, but she will be returned to the one who sent her, through those who brought her, along with the things that were brought with her. For this is what he says: "And he that strengthened her in those times." the wealth that makes the marriage strong and desirable. 7. "And there shall stand up, he says, a shoot from her root in his place." The meaning is: though she will be returned to her father, she will bear a king who will oppose the kingdom of the one who gave her. "And he shall come, he says, against the force." And he calls Jerusalem "the force," as enjoying divine grace,
