I give you over to the sons of Kedem for an inheritance, and they will encamp with their full company within you, and they will place their tents in you; they will eat your fruits, and they will drink your fatness. And I will make the city of Ammon into a pasture for camels, and the sons of Ammon into a pasture for sheep, and you will know that I am Adonai the Lord. The other translators have interpreted the sons of Kedem as the sons of the East; and these are descended from Ishmael by race. 81.1061 Therefore, the God of all says through the prophet to the sons of Ammon: Since you rejoiced when you saw the temple dedicated to me trampled by defiled and unholy men, and the land of Israel laid waste, and the tribe of Judah made captive, I will make you subject to those much inferior and weaker than the Babylonians, who will surround you with many misfortunes, pitching their tents in your cities, pasturing their herds of camels in your country, and making you yourselves shepherds of sheep. Therefore, when these things happen to you, you will learn that it was not because of my weakness that my people suffered what they suffered, but because of their own transgression. 6, 7. For this reason, thus says Adonai the Lord: Because you clapped your hand, and stamped your foot, and rejoiced with your soul over the land of Israel; for this reason, behold, I will stretch out my hand against you, and I will give you for a plunder among the nations, and I will destroy you from among the peoples, and I will utterly destroy you from the lands, and you will know that I am Adonai the Lord. For since, he says, delighting and exulting in the evils of my people, you both clapped your hands, and made a noise with your feet, leaping and dancing, for this reason you will suffer harsher things, and through these events you will learn my sovereignty. From here he transfers the prophecy to Moab, being the brother of Ammon, and a neighbor. 8-11. Thus says Adonai the Lord: Because Moab and Seir said, 'Behold, the house of Israel and Judah are just like all the nations;' for this reason, behold, I am breaking the shoulder of Moab from his cities, from his extremities, the choice land, the house of Beth-jeshimoth, above the spring of the seaside city, Baal-meon and Kiriathaim. The sons of Kedem I have given against the sons of Ammon, them for an inheritance, and I will give it up for removal, so that there may be no memory of the sons of Ammon among the nations. And in Moab I will execute judgments, and you will know that I am the Lord. He joined Seir with Moab, since he too was one of the neighbors; and by Seir he means those descended from Esau by race; and he was also called Edom, which is 'ruddy' or 'red'; and Seir means 'hairy' and 'covered with hair'. And Esau, the brother of Jacob, had both of these characteristics. "For, it says, 'the first came out ruddy, all over like a hairy garment;'" and the patriarch Jacob about him to his mother. "'Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am 81.1064 a smooth man.'" Since therefore, he says, Seir and Moab, revelling in the evils of my people, dared to say that my people are no different from the rest of the nations, and this blasphemy has come against me, as if, being weak just like the idols of the other nations, I was not able to defend my people; for this reason, "I am breaking the shoulder of Moab from his cities;" that is, I will destroy their strength; and not only those situated in the mountains, but also his coastal cities I will make desolate. And by coastal he means those situated by the Dead Sea; for the Moabites lived far from the other sea. And he also says the names of the cities, of which a small remnant has remained up to the present; and some are of this Arabia, and others of that one. And he adds that these also he will give over to the same enemies as their brothers, the sons of Ammon, and that by experience they will learn that the Master is powerful, able to defend, but refraining from doing this because of the people's transgression. Therefore he added: "And
