they will know that I am the Lord." Thus, having foretold the things that would happen to Moab, he transfers the discourse to Seir, also known as Edom. 12-14. Thus says Adonai the Lord: Because of what Idumea did in taking vengeance with wrath on the house of Judah, and they bore a grudge, and exacted punishment from them; therefore thus says Adonai the Lord: And I will stretch out my hand upon Idumea, and I will destroy from it man and beast, and I will make it desolate, and from Teman and Dedan they shall fall pursued by the sword. And I will give my vengeance upon Idumea by the hand of my people Israel, and they will do in Idumea according to my wrath, and they will know my vengeance, says Adonai the Lord. For not only did they rejoice similarly to the Moabites and Ammonites, but they also showed their own wickedness by their deeds, keeping that former wrath; "For, it says, 'Esau was angry with Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him;'" for this reason I will not deliver them to other enemies, but to my own people who were wronged by them, so that through complete desolation they might learn the power of my dominion. And Teman is a city of Idumea, and Dedan likewise, of those born to the patriarch Abraham from Keturah, and they were eponymous with their founders. And Dedan was near Idumea, and was in accord. Thus, having foretold the things concerning these, he transfers the prophecy to the foreigners. For the Idumeans are not foreigners, being descendants of Isaac; nor indeed the Ammonites and Moabites, who trace their lineage from Lot. Therefore, the Tyrians and Si 81.1065 donians were foreigners, and all others who were their neighbors; but divine Scripture especially calls foreigners the Ashkelonites and Gazans, Gittites and Ekronites, and Ashdodites, since they had land joined to the tribe of Judah, and were very much borderers and neighbors. Therefore, he also says the things that will happen to these. 15-17. Thus says Adonai the Lord: Because of what the foreigners did in wrath, and they rose up for vengeance, exulting with their whole soul, to destroy in everlasting enmity. Therefore thus says Adonai the Lord: Behold, I will stretch out my hands upon the foreigners, and I will destroy the Cretans, and I will destroy the remnant who inhabit the seacoast. And I will execute great vengeance upon them with the rebukes of my anger, and they will know that I am Adonai the Lord, when I give my vengeance upon them. And he charges these with wrath, similarly to the Idumeans. For, having borne a grudge, he says, against my people, as having conquered and established their own kingdom, they made the time of disaster a time of punishment, and rising up, they inflicted countless evils upon them; for this reason I will exact penalties from them for their wrath, and I will deliver them to divinely-sent plagues, and with the rulers I will destroy the subjects, and I will give them over to inescapable evils; so that through what they endure they may know the power of my dominion. But let us not wait to know our Master through the experience of evils; but receiving the knowledge through His ever-flowing gifts, let us be grateful for the good deeds, and let us flee the passion of wrath, having learned its destructive fruits; and let us keep the apostolic commandment, not waiting for the sun to set on our grief against one another; but let us extinguish our anger before its setting. For thus we shall also cease the anger of the just judge against us, and we shall reap that lovely and much-desired good will; which may we all attain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom is the glory to the Father, with the Holy Spirit, unto the ages of ages; Amen.
