Unless you are going to accuse and condemn yourself, as not having done what you say, and for this reason you shout out the words, as one who has never made a beginning in such things, (158) first lay the rock of the foundations, for a building is not constructed in the air! Do the commandments of Christ, the rock, the builder of the divine church, of the new people of the rational sheep. Act and speak, building upon the rock, or rather, be built yourself by the rock. Let Him be both shepherd, and architect, let Him be for you the foundation of life. What need is there of a roof before the foundations? First the structure and then the roof, action in knowledge and thus contemplation. Why do you want to drink the wine before the grape harvest? This is not put into an old wineskin. Why gather the sheaves before the sowing and think to give them to others in vain? If you wish, come, do not fall from the way, but teach concerning the depth of judgments, of those concerning us, how others, perhaps wicked and not knowing God, prosper, how others are unfortunate, knowing God and known by God alone, others are poor, perhaps giving thanks, and others, being beggars, bear it with gratitude, while others grow rich, being wickedly ungrateful, and still others, robbing and doing injustice, think to serve God by these things, and many other things, which you see every day, that mortals do and suffer in turn, and God endures it, the creator of all. (159) Might someone be accounted unjust by the lawless or by those who, like me, are fainthearted? Tell, teach about the divine judgment, about that hour and day, in which we all will stand naked before the judgment seat of my God and Savior and for the deeds and words here, for reasonings, and thoughts alike, we will receive the rewards according to what is deserved; say, who there will have confidence and who, in turn, will be put to shame? You have countless things to say about these matters; but after this, consider also creation, for in it you will find another abyss! See the heaven, the sun and the stars,
