that he too will make him recline in the kingdom of heaven, he who is borne upon the Cherubim, and girding himself according to his unfailing promise will minister to him. And the neck of this body is unwavering hope.

Behold, then, we have completed the whole body, with God's help and grace, that of a perfect man, I think, having all its members whole. Therefore, only the head is lacking for it. But perhaps you supposed that we had said everything and had left nothing at all lacking, as if what has been said were sufficient for the wholeness of virtue and the salvation of the soul. But this is not so, it is not so. For just as the body, having all its members, but deprived of the head, is completely dead and inactive, and again the head without the rest of the whole body, while it is a head in itself, yet being separated from it, cannot show its own activities, so understand that it also happens with the spiritual body constructed by us through the cooperation of the Holy Spirit, and that all the things we have said without a head are stale and useless, even if many, in the working and partial acquisition of these things, are foolishly disposed as if they have achieved the whole, and being dead do not perceive the good of which they have been deprived. For the things that have been said, even if we have recounted them separately for a clearer example and knowledge, yet without the head and the natural connection to one another, it is impossible for these things to be constituted and strengthened. For just as the body of a small child deprived of its head can never grow, but both being united and receiving nourishment from one another (192), that is, the body through the mouth and the head again through the moisture sent up from the body, so the whole person is nourished and grows, understand that the same thing happens after the head is placed on the spiritual body, and you will see it. And that I may make this clearer to you, listen carefully as I make a repetition of what has been said.

You have, therefore, faith and humility as the foundations of the virtues, and built upon these all the virtues which I have already mentioned, through which, clearly, the whole body was constructed and completed up to the neck, which is hope; which stands above the rest of the body, but it alone by itself, not being joined to the head, is dead along with the other members of the body, having nowhere to receive into it the breath or respiration of the Spirit that gives life and moves the body and the members, and to partake of imperishable food at all. For this reason, then, that we may not leave the measure of the stature of Christ incomplete, we place upon it, as a head in reality, holy love, not having conceived or contrived this from ourselves, far from it, but being taught by that Holy Spirit, from whom he who said had it: "And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love," and again: "If I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, and if I have all knowledge and know all mysteries, and if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and if I give my body to be burned, but have not love, I am profited nothing." For faith, through the mediation of hope, by holy love, invisibly and imperceptibly—I speak of those still infants—being made eager and taught and made sufficient, accomplishes all the aforementioned things; and in accomplishing them (193) it nourishes and heals and causes the head to grow through such things, that is, I say, love itself; and this, being healed and growing, provides greater strength in proportion to the rest of the body of virtues and prepares it to stretch forward more fervently to the things that are before.

And so all the members of the spiritual body grow little by little, like bone to bone and joint to joint, being put together and fitted together and bound together by holy love. But this love, or rather the

Ἀλλ᾿ ἴσως πάντα εἰπεῖν ἡμᾶς ἐλογίσασθε καί μηδέν μηδαμῶς ὑστερηκέναι, ὡς ἀρκούντων δῆθεν καί τῶν εἰρημένων εἰς ὁλοκληρίαν ἀρετῆς καί σωτηρίαν ψυχῆς. Οὐκ ἔστι δέ τοῦτο, οὐκ ἔστιν. Ὥσπερ γάρ τό σῶμα, ἔχον πάντα τά μέλη, τῆς δέ κεφαλῆς ἐστερημένον, νεκρόν ἐστιν εἰς ἅπαν καί ἀνενέργητον, καί πάλιν ἡ κεφαλή δίχα τοῦ λοιποῦ ὅλου σώματος αὐτή μέν καθ᾿ ἑαυτήν κεφαλή ἐστι, κεχωρισμένη δέ τούτου τυγχάνουσα τάς ἑαυτῆς ἐνεργείας δεικνύειν οὐ δύναται, οὕτω μοι νόει καί εἰς τό ὑφ᾿ ἡμῶν διά τῆς συνεργείας τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος κατασκευασθέν πνευματικόν σῶμα γίνεσθαι καί ὅτι ἅπερ εἴπομεν πάντα δίχα κεφαλῆς ἕωλά εἰσι καί ἀνωφελῆ, εἰ καί πολλοί ἐπί τῇ τούτων ἐργασίᾳ καί μερικῇ κτήσει ὡς τό πᾶν κατορθώσαντες ἀφρόνως διάκεινται καί νεκροί ὄντες οὐκ ἐπαισθάνονται οὗ ἀπεστέρηνται ἀγαθοῦ. Τά μέν γάρ εἰρημένα, εἰ καί διῃρημένως εἰς ὑπόδειγμα καί γνῶσιν τρανότερον διηγησάμεθα, ἀλλ᾿ ἄνευ τῆς κεφαλῆς καί τῆς εἰς ἄλληλα φυσικῆς συναφείας συστῆναι ταῦτα καί κραταιωθῆναι ἀδύνατον. Καθάπερ γάρ σῶμα παιδίου μικροῦ ἐστερημένον τῆς ἑαυτοῦ κεφαλῆς οὐκ ἐνδέχεται αὐξηθῆναί ποτε, ἀλλ᾿ ἀμφότερα ἡνωμένα ὄντα καί τήν ἐξ ἀλλήλων (192) τροφήν δεχόμενα, εἴτ᾿ οὖν τό σῶμα διά τοῦ στόματος καί ἡ κεφαλή πάλιν διά τῆς ἀναπεμπομένης ὑγρότητος ἀπό τοῦ σώματος, οὕτω τρέφεται καί αὔξεται ὅλος ὁ ἄνθρωπος, τό αὐτό μοι μετά τό ἐπιτεθῆναι τῷ πνευματικῷ σώματι τήν κεφαλήν κατανόησον καί ὄψει γινόμενον. Καί ἵνα σοι σαφέστερον τοῦτο ποιήσωμαι, ἐπανάληψιν ποιουμένου μου τῶν εἰρημένων ἀκριβῶς ἄκουε.

Ἔχεις τοιγαροῦν πίστιν καί ταπείνωσιν τάς βάσεις τῶν ἀρετῶν καί ἐπί ταύταις τάς ἀρετάς πάσας, ἅς ἔφθην εἰπών, ἐποικοδομηθείσας, δι᾿ ἅς ὅλον δηλονότι κατεσκευάσθη τό σῶμα καί μέχρι τραχήλου ἀπετελέσθη, ὅπερ ἐστίν ἡ ἐλπίς· ἥτις τοῦ μέν λοιποῦ ὑπερανέστηκε σώματος, αὐτή δέ μόνη καθ᾿ ἑαυτήν μή συναφθεῖσα τῇ κεφαλῇ συννενέκρωται τοῖς λοιποῖς τοῦ σώματος μέλεσιν, μή ἔχουσα ὅθεν εἰς πνοήν ἤ ἀναπνοήν τοῦ ζωοποιοῦντος καί κινοῦντος τό σῶμα καί τά μέλη Πνεύματος δέξασθαι καί τροφῆς ὅλως ἀφθάρτου μεταλαβεῖν. ∆ιά δή τοῦτο, ἵνα μή ἀτελές τό τῆς ἡλικίας Χριστοῦ μέτρον ἐάσωμεν, ὥσπερ κεφαλήν τῷ ὄντι τήν ἁγίαν ἀγάπην ἐπιτίθεμεν ἐπ᾿ αὐτῇ, οὐκ ἀφ᾿ ἑαυτῶν τοῦτο νοήσαντες ἤ συσκευάσαντες, ἄπαγε, ἀλλ᾿ ἐκ τοῦ Ἁγίου ἐκείνου Πνεύματος διδαχθέντες, οὗ εἶχεν ὁ εἰπών· "Μένει δέ τά τρία ταῦτα, πίστις, ἐλπίς, ἀγάπη· μείζων δέ πάντων ἡ ἀγάπη", καί αὖθις· "Ἐάν ἔχω πᾶσαν τήν πίστιν, ὥστε ὄρη μεθιστάνειν, καί ἐάν ἔχω πᾶσαν τήν γνῶσιν καί εἰδῶ τά μυστήρια πάντα καί ἐάν ψωμίσω πάντα τά ὑπάρχοντά μοι καί ἐάν ταῖς γλώσσαις τῶν ἀνθρώπων λαλῶ καί τῶν ἀγγέλων καί ἐάν παραδῶ τό σῶμά μου ἵνα καυθήσωμαι, ἀγάπην δέ μή ἔχω, οὐδέν ὠφελοῦμαι". Ἡ γάρ πίστις διά τῆς ἐλπίδος μεσιτευούσης ὑπό τῆς ἁγίας ἀγάπης ἀοράτως καί ἀνεπαισθήτως, ἐν τοῖς νηπίοις ἔτι λέγω, προθυμουμένη καί διδασκομένη καί ἱκανουμένη, πάντα τά προειρημένα ἐπιτελεῖ· ἐπιτελοῦσα δέ (193) τρέφει καί θεραπεύει καί αὐξάνειν ποιεῖ διά τῶν τοιούτων τήν κεφαλήν, αὐτήν, φημί, τήν ἀγάπην· αὕτη δέ θεραπευομένη καί αὐξάνουσα, πλείονα κατά ἀναλογίαν παρέχει τῷ λοιπῷ τῶν ἀρετῶν σώματι τήν ἰσχύν καί τοῖς ἔμπροσθεν προσεπεκτείνεσθαι παρασκευάζει θερμότερον.

Καί οὕτως αὐξάνουσι κατά μικρόν ὅλα τά μέλη τοῦ πνευματικοῦ σώματος, ὥσπερ ὀστοῦν πρός ὀστοῦν καί ἁρμονία πρός ἁρμονίαν, ὑπό τῆς ἁγίας ἀγάπης συντιθέμενα καί συναρμολογούμενα καί συνδούμενα. Ἡ δέ ἀγάπη αὕτη, εἴτ᾿ οὖν ἡ
