CHAPTER 20. 1, 2. And it came to pass in the eleventh year, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came

to me, saying: 81.1068 Because Sor said against Jerusalem, Aha, she is broken, she is destroyed, the nations have turned to me, she that was full is made desolate. In the eleventh year of the captivity of Jeconiah, and of the reign of Zedekiah in the fourth month, on the ninth of the month, Jerusalem was captured by the Babylonians. A few days, therefore, before the capture, the prophet is commanded to make prophetic pronouncements against Tyre. For Tyre is called Sor in the local tongue. And she also rejoiced at the siege of Jerusalem, and supposed that, with that most illustrious city destroyed, she herself would rise to power over all the neighboring nations. 3-6. Therefore thus says the Lord Adonai: Behold, I am bringing upon Sor, and I will bring up against you many nations, as the sea comes up with its waves, and they will cast down your walls; And they will pull down your towers, and I will scrape her dust from her, and I will make her a bare rock. There will be a drying of nets in the midst of the sea, for I have spoken, says the Lord Adonai, and it shall be for a spoil to the nations And her daughters that are in the field shall be slain by the sword, and they shall know that I am the Lord. Through these things he threatens her with the campaign of the Babylonians; and he says that her surrounding walls will be destroyed, and she will become desolate, so as to resemble some smooth rocks, on which fishermen are accustomed to spread their nets. And he says that the cities and villages subject to her will be laid waste; for he calls these her daughters. And he indicates also the gain from the disasters; 7, 8. For they shall know, he says, that I am the Lord. For thus says the Lord Adonai: Behold, I am bringing upon you, Sor, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the north; he is a king of kings, with horses and chariots, and horsemen, and a company of very many nations. He will slay your daughters that are in the field with the sword, and he will place a guard against you, and build a wall around you, and cast a trench for you, and build a rampart around you in a circle, and a station of arms, and will set his spears against you. - A guard he calls the attack-bases, which invading enemies are accustomed to build, so that the things outside may be plundered, and those being besieged may perish from lack of necessities; and to build a wall around he calls the walls built on the outside by the enemies. And he will add, he says, to this surrounding wall, palisades, and trenches, and mounds, so that no one dares to go out, and so that all kinds of missiles may be easily thrown. Then he adds: 81.1069 9-14. Your walls and your towers he will pull down with his weapons. From the multitude of his horses their dust shall cover you, and from the sound of his horsemen, and of the wheels of his chariots, your walls shall be shaken, when he enters your gates, as one entering a city from a plain. With the hoofs of his horses they shall trample all your streets; he will slay your people with the sword, and he will bring down the substance of your strength to the ground. And he will make a prey of your power, and spoil your substance, and cast down your walls, and will pull down your desirable houses, and will cast your stones, and your timber, and your dust into the midst of the sea. And he will cause the multitude of your musicians to cease, and the sound of your harps shall be heard no more. And I will make you a bare rock, you shall be a place for the drying of nets, and you shall be built no more, for I have spoken, says the Lord Adonai. True, he says, are all the things foretold by me. Receive, therefore, the prophecy as unerring, that the Babylonians will both pull down your walls, and having destroyed your nearby houses, they will fill them up with the stones; and so great will be the din of the horses and the chariots, that the city will seem to be shaken by an earthquake. And they will plunder your substance, and your inhabitants

Κʹ. αʹ, βʹ.
