breathing his last, "By deceit," he says, "Paris and Deiphobus worked against me because of Polyxena." Therefore, very swiftly snatching the body onto their shoulders and bringing it to the tents and cremating it, they bury it in the earth. After the death of Achilles, a battle took place, and with many having fallen on both sides, Philoctetes and Paris come to single combat. And having won the lot first, Paris shoots at Philoctetes, but misses. But he, shooting back, pierces Paris' left hand, and shooting a second time, he maimed his right eye, and shooting a third time at his feet and ankles, he throws Paris to the ground. Whom they snatched up half-dead and entered into Ilium. And he, seeing his three sons by Helen, Bunomus, Corythaeus, and Idaeus, standing beside him as small children, remained speechless, and breathed his last in the middle of the night. And his former wife, Oenone, did away with herself by hanging. And Deiphobus immediately took Helen as his wife, whom Menelaus later mutilated on her account.

That the so-called Palladium was a wooden idol of Pallas. They said this was consecrated by certain unspeakable and demonic consecration-rites, that is, enchanted by foul mysteries, victory-bringing, as they say, and keeping the city in which it is laid up unconquerable. This little figure, a certain philosopher and initiator of unspeakable sorceries, Asius by name, brought and bestowed as a gift upon Tros, the king of the Trojans, when he was about to found the city of Ilium; in return for which favor, Tros renamed the whole country under him, formerly called Epirrhopon, Asia after that man's name. This wooden image, therefore, the Greeks, having heard that they would not be able to take the city as long as it was laid up in it, had the strength to steal, with Odysseus and Diomedes entering secretly and remaining in the temple of Pallas during the days of the festival; and by the will of Antenor, who was a leader of the Trojans, through his wife Theano, who was a priestess of Athena, they took it by night and went out, at which time also they observed the pitiful and ill-omened symbols that befell the Trojans during that night and, going out in the morning, reported them to the Greeks. For they say that when the Trojans were striving to sacrifice on the altar of Apollo, the wood and the meat were placed as is right, but the fire, being cast upon the wood, did not catch, but was extinguished. And when the fire had been brought many times and did not burn, everything on the altar falls to the ground. And the Trojans, concluding that these things were not a good omen for them, both Priam and the rest send Antenor as an ambassador to the Danaans, so that, having taken whatever ransom they might wish, they might end the war. And Antenor, serving as ambassador, said to the Achaeans, "We have suffered all the things that transgressors ought to suffer. For the things in which Paris wronged Menelaus, he has paid the penalty; for the things of Ilium, the tombs of the slain bear witness. Now therefore we, the survivors, bring a ransom to you. For the sake of the gods, for the sake of our country, for the sake of our children, you who are Greeks, save those who were before disobedient, but are now suppliants." Being persuaded by these things, the Greeks send Odysseus and Diomedes to determine the amount of the money. And they did determine two thousand talents of gold and two thousand talents of silver, and having received all that had been agreed upon and departing from the city, they returned to the army. After these things, when the Greeks were sacrificing and wishing to sail away, Odysseus made everyone swear during the sacrifices not to sail away from Ilium before the wooden horse was constructed. Whence also, having constructed it with the most suitable timbers and having adorned it skillfully, and having made it wondrously marvelous by the crafts of Epeius with all contrivances, so that it could also hide an army of twenty-four hoplites within, being drawn unforced by small pulleys, following its fodder-bag, and having thus built it, and having burned their tents and sailed away and hidden themselves at the island of Tenedos by the suggestions of Odysseus, a certain noble man
