they will enslave; and so great a desolation will seize you, that in you the fishermen will dry their wetted nets, and what they are accustomed to do on the smooth rocks near the sea, this they will do in you because of the great desolation. And the phrase, "You shall be built no more," we shall learn from the prophecy of the blessed prophet Isaiah. For that prophet also prophesied sorrowful things for Tyre, but he limited the sorrowful things to a specified time; "For Tyre," he says, "shall be forgotten for seventy years, as the time of one king, as the time of a man; and it shall be, after seventy years, God will visit Tyre, and she shall be restored again to her former state, and she shall be a marketplace for all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of all the earth, and her merchandise shall be holy to the Lord," and so forth. Therefore, the phrase "It shall not be built," hints at the change of ways; that it shall not be built according to its former impiety, but will receive a different and completely opposite building, which, according to the prophet Isaiah, shall be holy to the Lord. And the facts bear witness, and the piety that now prevails. For from its former superstition and error concerning idols, having turned to God, it received the light of the knowledge of God. 15, 10. For thus says the Lord to Tyre: Shall not the islands shake at the sound of your fall, 81.1072 when your wounded groan, when the slain by swords are in your midst? And all the princes of the nations of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and they shall take off the tiaras from their heads, and shall take off their embroidered garments? They shall be utterly amazed, they shall sit upon the ground, and they shall fear their own destruction, and they shall groan over you? Tyre was famous from of old, not only in Asia, but also in Europe; therefore, necessarily, the calamity that befell it became well-known. And learning of this, he says, those who inhabit the islands will be terrified, and their kings, out of despair and grief, will strip their heads of the diadems; for these he called tiaras; and they will take off their costly clothing, and will assume a mournful appearance, expecting to suffer the same things. For he signified this by saying: "And they shall fear their own destruction." So much will the report of your evils distress them, that they will also take up a lamentation for you, and will say: 17, 18. How you have perished, and been destroyed from the sea, the renowned city, which was strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants? who gave her terror to all who inhabit it. And the islands shall be afraid from the day of your fall, and the islands shall be troubled by your power in the sea. Considering, he says, your former power, and observing the calamity that has now befallen you, they will lament you, who were once so celebrated and renowned; but they will be anxious for themselves, fearing lest they fall into the same things. 19, 20. For thus says the Lord Adonai: When I make you a desolate city, like the cities that shall not be inhabited, when I bring up the abyss upon you, and much water shall cover you. And I will bring you down to those who go down into the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you dwell in the depths of the earth, as an eternal desert with those who go down into the pit, so that you may not be inhabited, nor rise up on the land of the living. - He called the Babylonian army an abyss because of its multitude. For since it is also surrounded by water, and resembles an island, being entirely situated within the sea, and having one entrance from the land, he fittingly used the trope, calling the multitude of enemies much water and an abyss. And the phrase, "I will bring you down to those who go down into the pit, to the people of old;" signifies death, under which all who pass through this life end their present age. He therefore named the dead "the people of old." And the phrase, "Nor rise up on the land of the living," declares that of the Psalm. Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ καὶ αὐτὴ περίῤῥητός ἐστι, καὶ νῆσος ἐμφερὴς, πᾶσα μὲν ἔνδον ἐν τῇ θαλάττῃ κειμένη, μίαν δὲ ἀπὸ γῆς εἴσοδον ἔχουσα, ἁρμοδίως ἐχρήσατο τῇ τροπῇ, ὕδωρ πολὺ καὶ ἄβυσσον καλέσας τῶν πολεμίων τὸ πλῆθος.
