proof. But I myself wished, with much exactness, having met with the brethren around Theodotus, to receive from them a written statement of faith and to propose it to the aforementioned, so that both things might happen: that the orthodox faith might be confessed by him, and that they themselves might be fully convinced, having no grounds for contradiction from the fact that their proposals had been accepted. But, before they learned why we had met and what we had achieved from our discussion, those around Bishop Theodotus no longer deemed us worthy to urge us to the synod. But we departed from the middle of our journey, disheartened that they were rendering incomplete our labors for the peace of the Churches. 99.3 After these things, then, since the necessity of the journey to Armenia overtook us, knowing the man's peculiar nature and wishing both to defend myself for what had been done and to inform him fully in the presence of a trustworthy witness, I came to Getasa, the estate of the most God-beloved bishop Meletius, with the aforementioned Theodotus also being present with me; and so there, when we were accused by him concerning our association with Eustathius, I stated the success from our meeting, that I had received him as agreeing with us in all things. But when it was asserted that he had denied it after our departure and was assuring his own disciples that he had in no way agreed with us concerning the faith, I responded to these things (and consider, most admirable sir, if I did not make the most just and irrefutable replies to this) that I, for my part, am persuaded, conjecturing from the man's usual steadfastness, that he would not so lightly turn about to the opposite, nor now confess, and now deny what he had said, a man who shuns even falsehood in trivial matters as a dreadful thing, let alone that he would ever choose to oppose the truth concerning matters of such importance and so renowned among all. But if it should happen that what is rumored by you is true, it is necessary to propose to him a written statement containing all the proof of the orthodox faith. If, then, I find him agreeing in writing, I will remain in communion; but if I find him backing out, I will withdraw from association with him. When Bishop Meletius and brother Diodorus the fellow-presbyter approved the proposal (for he was present at the proceedings), the most reverend brother Theodotus agreed there and, having urged us to come down to Nicopolis, so that we might both visit his Church and take him as a fellow traveler for the journey as far as Satala, leaving us in Getasa, when he reached Nicopolis, forgetting what he heard from me and what he had agreed with us, he sent us away, having shamed us with those insults and indignities which I related a little before. 99.4 How then was it possible for me, most honored head, to do any of the things commanded and give bishops to Armenia, when the partner of my care was so disposed towards me? From whom I was expecting to find suitable men, because there are in his diocese men who are both pious and prudent and skilled in the language and knowledgeable of the other customs of the nation; whose names, though I know them, I will willingly keep silent, lest any obstacle arise to their being useful to Armenia at some other time. And now having arrived as far as Satala in such a state of body, the other matters I seemed, by the grace of God, to be setting in order, having made peace among the bishops of Armenia and having discussed with them what was fitting, so that they might lay aside their customary disagreement and take up the genuine zeal of the Lord for the Churches, giving them also models concerning the things being indiscriminately transgressed in Armenia, and how it was proper for them to take care. And I also received decrees from the Church of Satala, containing a request that a bishop be given to them by us. And it also became a concern for me to investigate the slander poured out upon our brother Cyril, the bishop of Armenia, and
