having mistreated him, and having moderately mutilated him who was willing and rejoicing in the praise and the reward, they let him go as a traitor; who, when the barbarians inquired what this proposed work might be and to what end it tended, answered saying "The Danaans are dedicating this to the temple of Athena, both as an apology for the wrongs they did to her city, and also they have judged it necessary to dedicate this gift for the safety of their return to their own homelands and in memory of them." The Trojans, therefore, being persuaded by these things, taking the wooden horse, or rather their own destruction, with gladness and joy, and dragging it up with ropes and celebrating, lifting the lintel of the gate, brought it with the enemy into the sanctuary of their god. And at midnight those lying in ambush in the horse, having leaped out at their leisure, having killed Priam himself and his children, and having mutilated Deiphobus, and having killed the multitude of the men, with very bright and frequent torches from the wall they turned the fleet of the Danaans back toward themselves. After Ilium was captured, Ajax the son of Telamon and Odysseus each laid claim to the statue of Pallas, on the grounds that it belonged to him and that he would have it as a protective charm for his own city, as one who had fought before all others. And though many stratagems were spoken by both, nevertheless the Palladium was given into the keeping of Diomedes until morning. During the night, however, Ajax was slain secretly. And when morning came and he was found dead, a great sedition having arisen, Odysseus came under suspicion for the deed; whence, as the matter was kindling into a civil war, Odysseus was the first to drag down his ships and set sail from Troy, and after him all the others, and this became the beginning of the withdrawal of the Greeks. But Hecuba, as she was cursing the army, those with Odysseus stoned and cast into the sea in a place called Maroneia, which they also named the dog's tomb. From there in Sicily he falls in with a Cyclops, not one using a single eye according to the mythologies of Homer; but he was a man by nature just as all men and the other Cyclopes, who were also large in appearance and savage and abominable, very difficult in their disposition and most misanthropic and murderous. Then to the Aeolian islands, to Circe and Calypso, the daughters of Atlas; from which Circe he also had a son, Telegonus. Then to the lake 1.233 called Nekyopon, in which through phantoms he learned what was about to happen to him. From there he is cast away to the Sirens' rocks and the so-called Charybdis and Scylla, which, being situated in a narrow place, receives the currents of the Ocean and sinks those who sail by. wherein, having lost all his ships along with his companions, he himself, holding on to a plank, was carried along in the currents of the waters. Phoenicians found him sailing and brought him naked to Idomeneus in Crete. And he sends him to Phaeacia, now called Corcyra, to Alcinous, having given him two ships and 50 chosen men. Alcinous, therefore, taking more soldiers with Odysseus, seizes Ithaca. And having killed the suitors, and having cleansed the house of those plotting against him, he regains the kingdom. Odysseus, then, having lived for many years, ends his life at the hands of his own child, Telegonus, who had been born to him by Circe. For, suspecting death from his son based on certain oracles, he was on his guard against Telemachus and refused to be with him. So when Telegonus arrived at Ithaca and announced himself to his father, not being received by the guards, and it being night
