in you?» The prophetic word, therefore, holds to the sequence; for having pointed out the holy apostles, it calls them a dwelling place of the God of all. Sion was filled with judgment and righteousness. It calls the churches throughout the world Sion, as we have often previously shown. But if anyone wants Jerusalem to be signified here, the prophecy is true even in this way; for many myriads in it believed; and the great James is a witness, pointing them out and saying: "You see, brother, how many myriads there are of Jews who have believed, and they are all zealous for the law." For which reason the prophetic word also added: 6They shall be delivered up in law. That is, in the new covenant; for this is what the Three Interpreters have declared. For Theodotion said : "And faith will be your time," and Symmachus : "And faith will be of your time," and Aquila. "And faith will be your times." I have set forth the three interpretations in order to show the agreement of the thought; and the Seventy, therefore, called the new covenant "law," which the Others named "faith." In treasures is our salvation. For the good things are laid up in hope for the saints. For this very reason the divine apostle also exclaims: "For by hope we were saved; but hope that is seen is not hope; for what a man sees, why does he also hope for? But if we hope for what we do not see, we await it with patience," and again: "Our life is hidden with Christ in God." There is wisdom and knowledge and piety towards the Lord; these are treasures of righteousness. For those who have learned these things will enjoy the good things to come. And it calls the teaching of the Master wisdom and knowledge and piety; for the divine apostle also says: "Wisdom was given to us from God, both righteousness and |141 a| sanctification and redemption." 7Behold, in your fear they themselves will be afraid; those whom you feared will be afraid of you. And we see the fulfillment of this prophecy; for those of the Jews and Greeks who formerly persecuted the churches fear and dread them; and the demons who were formerly terrible to men now dread the nurslings of piety. Angels will be sent demanding peace, weeping bitterly; 8for their ways will be made desolate. The Master Christ destroyed, through the heralds of piety, the very paths of the error of idols; for he uprooted the sanctuaries of the demons from their foundations. And the demons themselves, formerly deified, being scourged at the tombs of the holy martyrs, lament bitterly. Thus they also beseeched the incarnate God the Word, saying: "What have we to do with you, Jesus, son of God? Have you come here before the time to torment us? Permit us to go into the herd of swine." The fear of the nations has ceased, and the covenant with them is taken away, and you shall not count them as men. This again the Three interpreted thus: "He who travels the path has ceased, he has scattered the covenant, he has rejected cities, he has not counted men." For since it said that the harmful paths were overturned, it continued teaching that those who formerly traveled them have departed from those paths and have scattered the covenant with the idols. And the Seventy also signify this same thing, that the vain fear of the nations has ceased, and they do not count those who have clung to error even among men. 9The earth mourned, those who mind earthly things. Lebanon was ashamed, the tyranny of idols. Asyron became a swamp. Through these things he alluded to the barrenness of those under the law; for Asyron is of their country. Galilee and Carmel will be manifest. He often called the desert Carmel, having given it this name after the change of <the> things. And he has already foretold good things for Galilee; for "Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness, saw a great light." But what became so renowned and conspicuous? the apostles from Galilee. 10Now I will arise, says the Lord, now I will be glorified, now I will be exalted, 11now you will see, now you will perceive. Τὰς κατὰ τὴν οἰκουμένην ἐκκλησίας Σιὼν καλεῖ, ὡς πολλάκις προαπε δείξαμεν. Καὶ τῆσδε τῆς προφη τείας θεωροῦμεν τὸ τέλος· καὶ γὰρ Ἰουδαίων καὶ Ἑλλήνων οἱ πάλαι τὰς ἐκκλησίας διώκοντες ταύτας δεδίασι καὶ πεφρίκασιν· καὶ οἱ πάλαι δὲ τοῖς ἀνθρώποις φοβεροὶ δαίμονες νῦν τῆς εὐσεβείας τοὺς τροφίμους δειμαίνουσιν. Ἄγγελοι ἀποσταλήσονται ἀξιοῦντες εἰρήνην, πικρῶς κλαίον τες· 8ἐρημωθήσονται γὰρ αἱ τούτων ὁδοί. ∆ιέφθειρεν ὁ δεσπότης Χριστὸς διὰ τῶν τῆς εὐσεβείας κηρύκων καὶ αὐτὰς τῆς τῶν εἰδώλων πλάνης τὰς ἀτραπούς· ἐκ βάθρων γὰρ ἀνέσπασε τὰ τῶν δαιμόνων τεμένη. Καὶ αὐτοὶ δὲ οἱ πάλαι θεοποιούμενοι δαίμονες παρὰ τὰς τῶν ἁγίων μαρτύρων μαστιγούμενοι θήκας πικρῶς ὀλοφύρονται. Οὕτω καὶ αὐτὸν ἐνανθρωπήσ αντα τὸν θεὸν λόγον ἱκέτευον λέγοντες· «Τί ἡμῖν καὶ σοὶ Ἰησοῦ υἱὲ τοῦ θεοῦ; Ἦλθες ὧδε πρὸ καιροῦ βασανίσαι ἡμᾶς; Ἐπίτρεψον ἡμῖν ἀπελθεῖν εἰς τὴν ἀγέλην τῶν χοίρων.» Πέπαυται ὁ φόβος τῶν ἐθνῶν, καὶ ἡ πρὸς τούτους διαθήκη αἴρεται, καὶ οὐ μὴ λογίσησθε αὐτοὺς ἀνθρώπους. Τοῦτο πάλιν οἱ Τρεῖς οὕτως ἡρμήνευσαν· «Ἐπαύσατο διοδεύων τρίβον, διεσκέδασε διαθήκην, ἀπώσατο πόλεις, οὐκ ἐλογίσατο ἀνθρώπους.» Ἐπειδὴ γὰρ εἶπεν ἀνατετράφθαι τὰς ἐπιβλαβεῖς ἀτραπούς, ἐπέμεινε διδάσκων ὡς ἀπέστησαν τῶν τρίβων ἐκείνων οἱ πάλαι διοδεύοντες καὶ τὴν πρὸς τὰ εἴδωλα διαθήκην ἐσκέδασαν. Καὶ οἱ Ἑβδομήκοντα δὲ ταὐτὸ τοῦτο σημαίνουσιν, ὅτι ἐπαύσατο ὁ μάταιος τῶν ἐθνῶν φόβος, τοὺς δὲ τῇ πλάνῃ προστετηκότας οὐδὲ τοῖς ἀνθρώποις συναριθμοῦσιν. 9Ἐπένθησεν ἡ γῆ, οἱ τὰ γήινα φρονοῦντες. Ἠσχύνθη ὁ Λίβανος, τῶν εἰδώλων ἡ τυραννίς. Ἕλη ἐγένετο ὁ Ἀσηρών. Τ ῶν ὑπὸ νόμον τὴν ἀκαρπίαν διὰ τούτων ᾐνίξατο· τῆς γὰρ αὐτῶν χώρας ὁ Ἀσηρών. Φανερὰ ἔσται ἡ Γαλιλαία καὶ ὁ Κάρμηλος. Κάρμηλον πολλάκις τὴν ἔρημον προσηγό ρευσε, τοῦτο αὐτῇ τὸ ὄνομα τεθεικὼς μετὰ τὴν <τῶν> πραγμάτων μεταβολήν. Τῇ δὲ Γαλιλαίᾳ καὶ ἤδη προείρηκε τὰ ἀγαθά· «Γαλιλαία» γὰρ «τῶν ἐθνῶν, ὁ λαὸς ὁ καθή μενος ἐν σκότει, εἶδε φῶς μέγα.» Τί δὲ οὕτω περιφανὲς ἐγένετο καὶ περίβλεπτον; οἱ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἀπόστολοι. 10Νῦν ἀναστήσομαι, λέγει κύριος, νῦν δοξασθήσομαι, νῦν ὑψωθήσομαι, 11νῦν ὄψεσθε, νῦν αἰσθήσεσθε.
