he makes them to mount and stand upon it, so that each of these may be shown excelling the many and be conspicuous. So, such men as Christians, what Christian, then, will name them?

But these things we have shown, as on a pillar by our discourse, to those who attempt to know and say everything, and think they are something when they are nothing, what kind and sort of men Christians are, so that by comparing themselves to the archetype, they may know how far short they fall of Christians in truth. But to you, the servants of Christ who are eager to learn and have prepared your hearing, the Master (229) of all cries out through His holy Gospels, saying: "While you have the light, run to the light, that darkness may not overtake you." Run through repentance in the way of His commandments, run, run until the time of His illumination, before the night of death overtakes you and you are consigned to eternal darkness. Run, seek, knock, that the gate of the kingdom of heaven may be opened to you, and you may be within it and possess it within you. For those who depart from this life before possessing it, where will they ever find it when they have gone there? Here, then, we were commanded to ask and seek and knock in repentance and tears, and to those who do so, the Master promised to give it to us. If, then, we are unwilling to do this and obey the Master Christ, so that while still remaining in this life we may hasten to receive the kingdom within us, shall we not, when we have departed there, justly hear Him say to us: "What do you now seek, which you refused to receive from Me when it was given? Did you not, when I exhorted you many times to labor and receive it from Me, refuse, but instead scorned it and preferred the enjoyment of corruptible and earthly things? By what works or words, then, will you be able to find it from now on?"

For this reason, therefore, fathers and brothers, I beseech you, let us keep the commandments of our God with all diligence, that we may attain both eternal life and kingdom, and that we may not hear now: "He who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath (230) of God remains on him," and in the age to come: "Depart from me, I do not know you, where you are from," but that we may hear that blessed voice saying, "Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you, because you fed me, who was hungering for your salvation, by the working of my commandments; you gave me drink, you clothed me, you gathered me and came to me, having cleansed your hearts from every stain and filth of sin; henceforth enjoy my goods, the enjoyment of which is ineffable and life eternal and immortal" -, which may we all attain by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Discourse 16. (231)

Concerning the energies of the Holy Spirit. And what is the contemplation of His mysteries. And how to the pure in heart

they are revealed. And a profitable narrative from the beginning concerning a certain subordinate, who received the Holy Spirit through the prayers of his spiritual

father. Brothers and fathers and children, a certain younger man narrated to me, saying that:

Being a subordinate to an honored father, equal in station to the great and lofty saints, hearing from him often of divine things happening from heaven among the
