Scripture addresses. The impiety, therefore, is twofold; for not only did it not know the giver of good things, but also to those completely inert, and not even able to put perceptible beauty around themselves, it has dared to ascribe the provision of these things. Then he recounts how many and what kind of gifts it enjoyed, and from how many nations the sources of its prosperity were brought to it. 5, 2. Your sons have put beauty upon you. Cedar from Senir was built for you, strips of cypress planks were taken from Lebanon. To make fir masts, they made your oars from Bashan. These are mountains that produce various woods. He therefore enumerates the things brought to it from all sides, and that you cut and transported the masts from Lebanon; the oars from Bashan; and the buildings from Senir. To these he adds: "Your sanctuaries they made of ivory, wooded houses from the islands of Kittim." But instead of, your sanctuaries, the other interpreters have put your horn, in accordance with what was said before; for the horn follows the mast and the oars. And if it might be said concerning idols, it is not unlikely. For, he says, it constructed ivory idols, and "wooded houses," that is, covered with planks; for so Aquila also translated. And indicating the preciousness of the woods, he also pointed out their places; "For you brought these, he says, from the islands of Kittim." 81.1077 And he calls the Greek islands Kittim. For through Jeremiah God says: "Cross over to the islands of Kittim, and see, and send to Kedar, and understand well, if such things have happened, if nations will change their gods, and they are not gods." And through Kedar he indicates the nations situated toward the east; and through Kittim, those toward the west. And Kition is a town in Cyprus, and is so named up to the present, which being aspirated, according to the Hebrew idiom, shows its relationship to Kittim; and Cyprus at that time ruled over the islands. Therefore he calls the Greek islands Kittim. From these islands, he says, the precious woods were brought to you. To these he adds: 7. Fine linen with embroidery from Egypt became bedding to place glory upon you, and to clothe you; hyacinth and purple from the islands of Elishah became your cloaks. Egypt, he says, brought you embroidered and all kinds of bedding; and it signifies the carpets, and the other things brought from there. And Greece sent out all kinds of cloaks to you, some purple-dyed, others having a hyacinthine color; for he calls Greece Elishah. 8. And your rulers, the inhabitants of Sidon, and the Aradians, became your rowers. The Hebrew and the Syriac do not have your rulers, but your neighbors. But so that we might also understand the interpretation of the Seventy, let us accept it thus: That your former rulers, the Sidonians, now together with the inhabitants of Arad man your naval fleet, rowing your ships; while the skilled men among you fill the role of pilot. For your wise men, he says, O Tyre, who were in you, these were your pilots. (9.) The elders of Byblos, and their wise men, who were in you, these strengthened your counsel. They did not strengthen their own city, but offered the best counsels and advice to you. "And all the ships of the sea, and their rowers, were in you, exchanging in your commerce, and they became for you unto the west of wests." From all sides, he says, merchants flocked together, some selling, others buying; for this is what "exchanging in your commerce" means; and not only those near you put into your harbors, but also those inhabiting the very extremities of the west. For "unto the west of wests" means this; for not only, he says, those who live to your west, but also those further west than them. 81.1080 10, 11. Persians, and Libyans, and Lydians were in your force, your men of war, who hung shields and helmets in you; these gave you your glory. The sons of the Aradians, and your force,
