But many of the men mentioned missed the truth of the original events, because they did not encounter our sacred books; yet they have all commonly testified about the antiquity, concerning which I now proposed to speak. Yet Demetrius of Phalerum and Philo the elder and Eupolemus did not miss the truth by much. It is right to forgive them; for it was not possible for them to follow our writings with all accuracy.” 9.42.4 Thus says Josephus. And whoever wishes to study the man's writings concerning the antiquity of the Jews, would find very many testimonies in agreement with those set forth. And another great crowd of witnesses flows in upon us, of writers both ancient and new, sealing their vote in like manner to those already mentioned, whose voices, taking forethought for the proportion of my work, I shall leave for the studious to seek and to search out, and we ourselves will pass on to the remaining promise.

Ι 10.1.1 I. HOW THE NOBLE PARTS OF LEARNING PASSED FROM BARBARIANS TO GREEKS; AND CONCERNING THE ANTIQUITY OF THE HEBREWS

Having already explained by what arguments we have preferred the philosophy of the Hebrews to that of the Greeks, and with what reasonings we have accepted the sacred books of those men, and then having shown that the Greeks themselves were not ignorant of these men, but mentioned them by name and were astonished at their manner of life, and made much account of their royal metropolis and of the rest of their history, come let us consider how they not only deemed the memory of these men worthy of record, but also became emulators of teaching and learning like theirs in certain doctrines that contribute to the improvement of the soul. 10.1.2 How therefore one or another of the admirable Greeks, travelling abroad among the barbarians, collected the other branches of learning from different sources, geometry, arithmetic, music, astronomy, medicine, and the very first elements of grammar, and countless other technical and useful pursuits, 10.1.3 I will very soon show.
