that by My departure I should occupy the place? I am also ever-moving uncircumscribably - for where will you come to seek me, that you may find me there? The heaven was brought into being by my word as nothing, the sun, stars and the earth have become for me a small side-work and the rest, whatever you see, likewise. The angels, brought forth by Me long before these things, see the glory of glory, but not nature itself; for I only thought to bring forth powers and immediately they stood by, hymning my might, But you, sitting down below, in exile, where all the first transgressors have fallen, both Adam and with him Eve, your foremother, and the evil devil, who deceived them, where there is deep darkness, where there is the great pit, where there are serpents ever biting your heels, where there is lamentation, woe, and unceasing grief, where there is every distress, both anxiety and sorrow, death together with corruption holds you all, how are you without anxiety, how are you negligent, tell me? How do you not care for the evils which you have done in the world, and make much of repentance alone and strive to show it to be true and ask about it with much supplication and investigate precisely how you might achieve it, so that you may be able through it by My philanthropy (167) to receive great remission of your iniquities? But leaving this aside, you seek the things beyond nature, you investigate the things in the heavens, or rather, not even these, but you investigate the nature of Me who, as has been said, brought forth heaven and all things as nothing, and you wish to learn the things concerning Me, as no one else knows; O the wonder, O the purpose of man! For though I blamed you, yet I will praise you again, because you too are My work and creation. How, having been formed from earth, from clay, from dust, and being held in it and living with it, do you count everything as nothing, but consider it as a shadow, and run past everything and seek Me alone? You wish to speak about Me, to discourse on account of Me, and to see Me, if possible, throughout your whole life, and to taste neither sleep, nor food, nor drink, nor to care at all for the clothing of the body. But just like trees standing along the way and logs, so you count all the glorious things of the world, and you run past them as nothing on the way of life, not turning the eye of your mind nor allowing the eyes of your soul to look at these things, but you imagine Me and remember Me alone
