Having heard these things, therefore, from him, fathers and brothers, I was nearly beside myself and became all trembling, having understood immediately to what a height of contemplation and knowledge he had ascended from only his love and faith toward his spiritual father, and what good things he was deemed worthy from the very beginning to see and enjoy, as if already casting off human weakness and having become an angel from among men.
For this reason, therefore, I beseech you, brothers in Christ, let us cast far from ourselves every attachment and every care for the present life, let us hate the pleasures of the flesh, the comfort of the body, ease and idleness, through which the worse prevails against the better; come, let us take up sincere faith toward God and our fathers and teachers according to God, let us acquire a contrite heart, a humbled disposition of the soul and a pure heart through tears and repentance from every stain and filth of sin, (237) so that we too may be deemed worthy to attain quickly to such measures and to see and enjoy the ineffable good things from here, from the divine light, if not completely, then in part and as much as we are able, according to the measure of our purification. For thus we shall unite ourselves to God and God will be united to us, and to those who draw near we shall be light and salt and a great benefit in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Discourse 17. (238)
Concerning contemplation and revelation and illumined prayer. And how he who is seized by the love of God and to a depth of humility
has come, is activated by the Holy Spirit. Brothers and fathers, great is the condescension and love for mankind of God toward
men. Wherefore, being astonished at the ineffable goodness of God, I cry out in amazement thus: "O astonishment of a miracle and power of God's commandments, what sort of men they make of those who do and keep them! "
For having once made a beginning in them, having sobered up a little from the depth of evils and darkness, on the one hand I was held by fear, being constrained by my evils, but on the other, love truly and the desire for the good for the most part turned me toward it.
And the whole accomplishment was a flight from evils, pushing me toward the good things. One thing only existed in the midst of these that displeased me, the habit of prejudices and an evil and pleasure-loving character, which vanishes through the persistent work of prayer and the study of the divine oracles and by making good things a habit. For just as when the sun rises little by little the darkness recedes and vanishes, (239) so also when virtue dawns, evil, like some darkness, is driven away and is shown to be without substance, and then we remain good forever, just as we were formerly wicked. Through a little patience, therefore, and minimal resolve, or rather, by the help of the living God, we are refashioned and renewed, being purified in soul and body and mind, and we become that which we happen to be unaware of, being covered by the passions, and we receive things of which we are not worthy.
From which I also received, I who am the most worthless and useless of all - for it is good to proclaim with gratitude the benefactions of God who loves mankind, by the grace of my Savior Jesus Christ. And I received grace upon grace and benefaction upon benefaction and fire upon fire, and flame upon flame, and ascents were added to my ascent, and at the end of the ascent, light, and to the light, a clearer light. And
