writing he said: But when he who had set me apart from my mother's womb, and called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me, so that I might preach him among the Gentiles . But writing to the Corinthians he did not say, We preach the Son , but Christ crucified ; not doing the opposite of what he was commanded, but knowing that Jesus is the same as Christ, and Lord, and Only-begotten, and God the Word. For this reason, beginning to write to the Romans, he called himself a servant of Jesus Christ. And he said he was set apart for the Gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures concerning his Son, who was descended from the seed of David according to the flesh, who was declared to be the Son of God in power , and so on. And he called the same one both Jesus Christ, and son of David according to the flesh, and Son of God, as God and Lord of all. And indeed, in the middle of the Epistle, having mentioned the Jews, he added: To whom belong the patriarchs, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is God over all, blessed forever and ever, Amen . And he said that the same one according to the flesh traces his lineage from the Jews, but is eternal God, and Lord of all created things together, hymned by the well-disposed. And he brought the same teaching to us also through what he wrote to the wonderful Titus. For , he says, awaiting the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ . And he addressed the same one as Savior, and great God, and Jesus Christ. And elsewhere: in the kingdom of Christ and of God . And indeed the choir of angels said to the shepherds: Behold, to you is born this day a Christ the Lord in the city of David . But it is superfluous to collect all such testimonies when writing to men who meditate on the law of the Lord day and night; and these are sufficient to persuade even the most disobedient not to divide the divine titles. That, however, I will not endure to pass over. For they say that he has said that there are many christs, but one Son. But I have supposed that he errs in this out of ignorance. For if he had read the divine Scripture, he would have known that the munificent Lord has bestowed the title of Son on many. For Moses the lawgiver, who wrote the ancient history, says: The sons of God, seeing the daughters of men, that they were beautiful, took wives for themselves from them . And God himself of all things said to this prophet: Say to Pharaoh: 'Israel is my firstborn son.' And in the great Ode: Rejoice , it says, O nations, with his people, and let all the sons of God be strong in him . And through Isaiah the prophet he says: I have begotten and exalted sons, but they have rejected me . And through the thrice-blessed David: I , he says, said: 'You are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High.' But the all-wise Paul wrote thus to the Romans: For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!' The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him . And writing to the Galatians he said thus: And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, 'Abba! Father!' So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Jesus Christ . And he taught these things also to the Ephesians: In love , he says, he predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ to himself . If, then, because the name of Christ is common, we must not glorify Christ as God, neither shall we worship him as Son; for many have also partaken of this name. And what am I to say of the Son? For many have received the very title of God, God having bestowed it. God of gods
