Therefore, believe me to be Light completely without shape, wholly simple, uncompounded, indivisible by nature, at the same time unsearchable, inaccessibly accessible. For I am truly seen, I am shown lovingly, being transformed according to the capacity of each person; it is not I who undergo this, but those who see are deemed worthy to see me thus. For otherwise they do not have the strength nor can they contain more, and because of this the same people at one time see a sun, when they have a purified mind, and at another time a star, when they are found under the gloom and the night of this body. The fervor of love makes me fire and radiance. For when the coal of friendship is kindled in you, then I too, seeing the eagerness of your heart, am found united to it and providing light and as it were being shown, I who created fire by a word. For the soul's virtues lie beneath as matter, in which the divine light of the Spirit, taking hold, is also called according to the underlying matter; for it possesses no proper name among men. Therefore when a man feels compunction and weeps, then this too is called water, for it purifies, united with the tears it washes away all filth. (170) And when mourning, by its own cooperation, extinguishes the heart's anger, it is named meekness; but again being kindled against impiety, this becomes through it what is called zeal, and again it is called peace and joy and goodness, because it bestows both on the one who mourns and makes joy gush forth in the heart like a spring. From which all compassion and mercy are poured out, flowing forth from the soul to all, especially to those who wish to repent and be saved; for it has mercy on all, but with these it also runs, and cooperates, and supports, and suffers in all things, being united to their soul in purpose and, inferring by the mind the beauty of repentance, it possesses a more genuine love towards them. And it is called humility, that the man who has tasted this sweetness and perceived the inconceivable beauty of the light considers all the things of the world, but also his own soul and his own body and every deed that is done, as nothing. Knowing these things, do not ask me at all anymore to speak or to explain to you such things in detail! For by nature they are unutterable, completely ineffable, and for men unmentionable, unknown even to angels and altogether incomprehensible to any other created being whatsoever.

Φῶς οὖν με εἶναι πίστευε ἀσχημάτιστον πάντῃ, ἁπλοῦν ὅλον, ἀσύνθετον, ἀμέριστον τῇ φύσει, ἀνεξερεύνητον ὁμοῦ, προσιτόν ἀπροσίτως˙ βλέπομαι γάρφ ὡς ἀληθῶς, δείκνυμαι φιλανθρώπως κατά τό ἐνεχόμενον ἑκάστου τῶν ἀνθρώπων μετασχηματιζόμενος˙ οὐκ ἐγώ τοῦτο πάσχω, ἀλλ᾿ οἱ ὁρῶντες οὕτως με βλέπειν καταξιοῦνται. Ἄλλως γάρ οὐκ ἰσχύουσιν οὐδέ πλέον χωροῦσιν καί διά τοῦτο οἱ αὐτοί ποτέ μέν καθορῶσιν ἥλιον, ὅταν ἔχωσι τόν νοῦν κεκαθαρμένον, ποτέ δέ ἄστρον, ὅταν ὑπό τόν γνόφον ἄρα καί τήν νύκτα τοῦ σώματος εὑρεθήσονται τούτου. Πῦρ δέ καί αἴγλην ποιεῖ με τό ζέον τῆς ἀγάπης. Ὅταν γάρ ἀναφθῇ ἐν σοί ἄνθραξ ὁ τῆς φιλίας, τότε κἀγώ τό πρόθυμον ὁρῶν σου τῆς καρδίας εὑρίσκομαι ἑνούμενος αὐτῷ καί φῶς παρέχων καί ὥσπερ δεικνύμενος, ὁ τό πῦρ λόγῳ κτίσας. Αἱ ψυχικαί γάρ ἀρεταί ὑπόκεινται ὡς ὕλη, ἐν αἷς περιδρασσόμενον φῶς τοῦ Πνεύματος θεῖον κατά τό ὑποκείμενον τῆς ὕλης καί καλεῖται˙ ἴδιον γάρ οὐ κέκτηται ὄνομα ἐν ἀνθρώποις. Ὅταν οὖν κατανύσσηται ἄνθρωπος καί δακρύῃ, τότε καί τοῦτο λέγεται ὕδωρ, καί γάρ καθαίρει, τοῖς δάκρυσιν ἑνούμενον πάντα ῥύπον ἐκπλύνει. (170) Ὅτε δέ σβέσῃ τόν θυμόν τῆς καρδίας τό πένθος τῇ συνεργείᾳ τῇ αὐτοῦ, ὠνόμασται πρᾳότης˙ πάλιν δέ ἀναπτόμενος κατά τῆς ἀσεβείας τοῦτο γίνεται δι᾿ αὐτοῦ, ὅπερ ζῆλος καλεῖται, εἰρήνη δ᾿ αὖθις καί χαρά λέγεται καί χρηστότης, ὅτι καί τά ἀμφότερα δωρεῖται τῷ πενθοῦντι καί ὡς πηγήν βλύζειν ποιεῖ τήν χαράν ἐν καρδίᾳ. Ἐξ ἧς πᾶσα συμπάθεια καί ἐλεημοσύνη ἐκχεῖται ἔξω ῥέουσα ἀπό ψυχῆς τοῖς πᾶσι, μάλιστα τοῖς μετανοεῖν θέλουσι καί σωθῆναι˙ καί γάρ τούς πάντας ἐλεεῖ, τούτοις δέ καί συντρέχει καί συνεργεῖ καί συγκροτεῖ καί συμπάσχει ἐν πᾶσιν, ἑνούμενος κατά ψυχήν αὐτῶν τῇ προαιρέσει καί τεκμαιρόμενος νοΐ κάλλος τῆς μετανοίας γνησιεστέραν κέκτηται πρός αὐτούς τήν ἀγάπην. Ταπείνωσις δέ λέγεται, ὡς τά τοῦ κόσμου πάντα, ἀλλά καί τήν ψυχήν αὐτήν καί τό ἴδιον σῶμα καί πρᾶξιν πᾶσαν ὡς οὐδέν ἡγεῖσθαι γινομένην ἄνθρωπον τόν γευσάμενον τῆς γλυκύτητος τούτου καί κατιδόντα τοῦ φωτός τό ἀμήχανον κάλλος. Ταῦτα εἰδώς μηκέτι μου περί τοιούτων λέγειν ἤ ἑρμηνεύειν σοι λεπτομερῶς δεηθῇς ὅλως! Φύσει γάρ ἄφθεγκτά εἰσιν, ἀνεκλάλητα πάντῃ, ἀνθρώποις τε ἀπόρρητα, ἄγνωστα καί ἀγγέλοις καί κτιστῇ πάσῃ ἄλλῃ τινί οὐσίᾳ ὅλως ἀκατανόητα.
