plots, and they will tear up from the foundations the precincts made by them for you, and they will deliver you to oblivion, as to some kind of death, having received authority "to tread on snakes and scorpions, and on all your power." And through these events you will learn that you have in vain persuaded men that you are a God. You will suffer these things, because you have had an uncircumcised mind, and have not circumcised the grievous passion of your arrogance. 11-13. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: Son of man, take up a lamentation for the prince of Tyre. And say to him: Thus says Adonai the Lord: You are a seal of likeness, full of wisdom, and a crown of beauty. And you were in the delight of the paradise of God; you have bound upon yourself every precious stone, carnelian, and topaz, and emerald, and jacinth, and carbuncle, and sapphire, and jasper, and silver, 81.1093 and gold, and ligure, and agate, and amethyst, and chrysolite, beryl, and onyx, and you have filled your treasuries and your storehouses in you with gold, from the day you were created. Someone might take these things, forcing the sense, to apply also to the visible prince of Tyre; but properly and truly it befits the sinful demon who was at work in him. Therefore, taking these things as applying to the prince of Tyre, the visible one, we will understand it thus: "You are a seal of likeness." For man was formed according to the divine image, full of wisdom; for he is also rational, and honored with reason, and a crown of beauty; for he is better than all the irrational creatures, both those on land and birds, and those in the water and amphibians. "And you were in the delight of the paradise of God." For you derive your lineage from the first father, who, immediately after being formed, was placed in the paradise of delight, to cultivate and keep it. And fittingly he also calls Jerusalem, the city called holy and divine, a paradise, having plants of God's prophecy and high priesthood, which provide life and salvation. For there was long ago a friendship between the king of the Tyrians and the king of the Israelites, and there was also some intercourse between them; and this is easy to learn from the books of Kings. But the phrase, "you have bound upon yourself every precious stone," is clear when understood literally, and taken as applying to a king. For I adorned you with countless good things, and brought to you all sorts of materials from everywhere, from which you made diadems and crowns, brooches and belts, and rings, and filled your treasuries, yet you continually thought the opposite, because of the abundance and splendor of these things. But concerning the devil, we will not understand these things in this way, but the phrase, "You are a seal of likeness," we will take as referring to the dominion and authority formerly given to him. For the divine Apostle says: "according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience." So that it is clear, that he was formerly entrusted with the administration of this air, but having fallen from his leadership on account of arrogance, he displays his own activity in those who disbelieve the word of the preaching. "Full of wisdom and a crown of beauty, and you were in the delight of paradise." Through these words he alludes to his former virtue. "For God saw," it says, "all that he had made, and behold, it was very good." And this one also was among the things that were made, not yet having undergone the change for the worse by his own will. And through the aforementioned stones, it signifies his manifold wisdom and knowledge. For the high priest, wearing on his breast 81.1096 the oracle of judgment, on which were these same stones, would enter into the Holy of Holies; and the breast is, as it were, a treasury of the heart, and a place of safekeeping. And all that follows does not befit the visible prince of Tyre, but the invisible one. 14. For you were prepared, it says, with the Cherub, anointed by God who tabernacles. For with those holy and venerable powers, you were deemed worthy of both creation and anointing; but here he calls anointing the sanctification, which is supplied by the divine Spirit to the incorporeal and holy powers. "And I placed you on the holy mountain of God; you were in the midst of fiery stones." Holy mountain of God
